Unexpectedly interrupted charging sessions are a frequent annoyance for drivers of electric vehicles and often have only one cause: communication problems between the vehicle, charging station and backend software. To solve this problem, Amperfied GmbH, a subsidiary of Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG (HEIDELBERG), and the charging infrastructure software specialist Pionix GmbH are working together on the new DC fast charging solution Amperfied Dynamic DC. Their aim is to increase reliability through a standardized software basis.
Robust overall system due to hardware and software expertise
A charging solution with industry-grade availability is the result of the smooth interplay of optimized hardware and software. Amperfied combines both in its offerings: HEIDELBERG's expertise in manufacturing industrial equipment and power electronics is complemented by its own years of experience in the development of charging hardware and software. The strategic decision to adopt the Pionix BaseCamp operating system as the foundation enables Amperfied to concentrate its software resources on developing the overall system with its own user interface and its own value-adding software features for its customers. BaseCamp itself uses a version of the open-source framework EVerest that has been optimized for industrial use and is constantly being refined in terms of compatibility and stability by a global community.
For Pionix, the sophisticated, modular hardware of Amperfied Dynamic DC serves as a reference for the application under real industrial conditions. The software basis also enables detailed status monitoring of all hardware components. This data forms the basis for predictive maintenance concepts, HEIDELBERG's own service backend and Amperfied's performance-based service offerings. The company will also offer its fast-charging systems in an availability-based operating hours model that guarantees high availability for customers. To ensure this, Amperfied relies on a combination of robust hardware, in-house service and strategic partnerships such as the one with Pionix, which guarantees reliability at software level.
"The partnership with Pionix allows us to clearly focus our resources on the areas that actually deliver a meaningful difference for customers," explains Robin Karpp, Managing Director of Amperfied GmbH. "In addition to the highly available hardware, these are software features that serve user-friendliness and availability, as well as our performance-based service offerings such as the availability-based operating hours model."
Niklas Behl, Senior Vice President R&D at Amperfied, elaborates on the strategic thinking behind this: "BaseCamp means we don't have to reinvent each standard component and can focus on the critical points that create added value for operators and users. The fact that we rely on open source at the core leads to greater compatibility and reliability in day-to-day operations compared to proprietary stand-alone solutions."
Marco Möller, CEO & Co-Founder of Pionix GmbH, emphasizes: "The close cooperation with Amperfied shows how industrial-grade availability requirements and innovative software development mutually amplify each other. The high demands on the charging infrastructure have helped us to continuously develop BaseCamp - exactly the kind of partnership that drives the EVerest ecosystem forward."
Joint appearance at the ICNC 2025 in Berlin
To underline the strategic importance of the partnership, Amperfied and Pionix will be jointly presenting at the ICNC (Intercharge Network Conference) 2025 in Berlin. In their presentation "Future Proof DC Charging with Outstanding Interoperability and Reliability", experts from both companies will talk about the benefits of open-source software for the availability of charging infrastructure. Interested trade visitors will also have the opportunity to get to know the Amperfied Dynamic DC fast charging solution on site.
The presentation will take place on September 3 from 11:00-11:30 a.m. on the Stage in the Tech Village (Agenda Conference).
