Versafire CP destined for London’s West End

23/06/2017

First Colour ditched a plan to buy two smaller digital presses in favour of buying a nearly new Versafire CP from Heidelberg.

“We needed a 250,000 clicks a month capacity and when we found the Versafire CP could handle up to 500,000 a month, had a competitive click charge and would take less space, which in our London West End location is at a premium, it was a simple decision,” says Cliff Finn, managing director. “We have service level agreements with several of our media customers that stipulate two hour turnrounds so they totally rely on us and we in turn have to have totally reliable technology.”

Mr Finn and senior members of his production team extensively tested work on the Versafire technology at Heidelberg headquarters in Brentford before finalising the deal.

First Colour did also look at Xerox options (it has been a loyal Xerox user for 20 years prior to this deal) but it needed no persuasion to buy from Heidelberg. First Colour already runs a Speedmaster PM52-5 and a SM52-2 which have run reliably and profitably for seven and ten years respectively. They had to be shoe-horned in to the basement of this shop-fronted premises!

As the 4,000 sq operation, just off Oxford Street, is such a busy part of London, special council permits are required to deliver equipment there and the press will be installed over a weekend at the end of the month.

The Versafire CP will primarily handle documents and presentation work. The company already uses the Prinect workflow software and it likes the fact it has the option to link in its digital printing as well.

“We do get some demand for 6pp A4 or A4 landscape work which we outsource; now we won’t have to,” says Mr Finn.

The £1.5m turnover company employs 15 people and is unusual in holding both ISO 14001 environmental and ISO 9001 quality certification. However, it is its strong service reputation that marks it out. It has 750 active clients from retailers to Government departments,
