Acanthus extends its digital portfolio with Versafire CV

08/06/2016

Acanthus Press is to supplement its HP Indigo digital printing technology with a Versafire CV from Heidelberg. It has specified the press with the Digital Front End, enabling it to link in the press to its existing Prinect workflows.

“We wanted to supplement our digital capacity with press technology that would be price competitive for smaller runs and personalised print,” says Phil Sydenham, director.

The company runs two B2 five-colour Speedmasters, one XL and one SM, for its quality offset work. However, it was not inevitable that the company would buy the digital press from Heidelberg and the order was only placed after market evaluation.

“We have seen an increase in digital demand and we wanted to try a toner-based system which could cover the really short runs at a competitive price,” says Mr Sydenham. “There is an improvement in quality and a more tactile, litho-like feel in this value end of the digital market. The six-page format means we can produce folders.”

The company will also offer customers the chance to use clear and white varnish and even the neon options announced by Heidelberg at Drupa. It is now that all Heidelberg’s digital presses take on the Fire branding (Versafire for commercial applications, Primefire 106 the industrial production press, Labelfire from Gallus and Omnifire for printing 3D objects).

The DFE (Digital Front End) will run across all Heidelberg’s digital range. For Acanthus it will enable them to handle variable data with increased processing speed, a benefit as this is the added-value business for digital printers.

When the Versafire CV is delivered in July it will start on flexible days but could run extended shifts if demand dictates.
