Senator Press invests over £1m in production upgrades

04/05/2015

The ability to secure the latest version Inpress Control has bought Senator Press’s investment plans forward two years. It will take delivery of a Speedmaster XL 75-5+L, a B2 five-colour and coater, and a Polar 155 N Plus guillotine in June.

“We normally replace our presses every ten years but we wanted Inpress Control to enable us to meet our customers colour control requirements so we are replacing our CD 74-5+L two years early. Before we have had Axis Control but the automation of Inpress Control means it works from sheet one on and will save us time, money and waste sheets,” says director Paul Cocker.

It will be one of the first companies in the UK to take delivery of the new Inpress Control 2, an updated automatic colour and register control device. The latest version is designed to further reduce makeready time as well as paper, ink and chemistry waste levels. It will measure metallic and opaque white and will integrate industry standard die-cutting marks.

Senator’s new press will have a 2/3 perfecting facility and is expected to run 50% straight and 50% perfected work. The company handles a wide range of products and with that a wide range of stocks, from 60gsm for medical forms through to carton board for packaging but also including work for corporate, motor and leisure sectors. Its average run is about 5,000.

This is the largest press Senator runs although it has small format and digital presses as well. The investment is critical to the business and the model had to be right to serve a 30% local and 70% national customer base, including the most demanding print management companies.

“We have a strong relationship with Heidelberg from prepress through to postpress. We like the quality of their machines and we believe the Speedmaster XL 75 with Inpress Control 2 is a big leap in technology that will give us 25-30% more output. It is for that reason we have also replaced a guillotine, taking an N series model with a stacklift for higher throughput with least strain on the operator.”

Senator runs a flexible shift pattern with 24 hour cover from Monday to Wednesday, double day shifts on Thursday and Friday and standard days at the weekend when needed.

The company is celebrating its 25th anniversary and was founded by Paul’s father Kenneth Cocker who still heads up the business. The company employs 22 members of staff.
