Stephens & George addresses increased demand with 15th press from Heidelberg UK

24/11/2020

In preparation for the expected increase in demand, post pandemic, Stephens & George has placed an order with Heidelberg for a New Generation 2020 Speedmaster XL 106–10P with the New Generation 4 Cutstar, the first one installed in Northern Europe.

This is the third press since 2018 using full “push to stop” technology.

The new 18,000sph press features Autoplate XL 3 plate changing, Prinect Inpress Control 3 register, colour control system, and Intellistart (the automation package which allows for Autonomous production of up to 50 jobs). Moreover, the new XL 106 includes Intelliline, which aids the production by visually signalling when operator intervention is required by means of LED illumination on the printing units of the press. This allows for the fastest job transition in just one and a half minutes, from the last sellable sheet to the next sellable sheet (this includes, 10 plate changes, 10 blanket washes and the automated makeready for colour and register). Furthermore, the New Generation 4 Cutstar offers impressive processing of thinner substrates thanks to a redesigned sheet travel path and added automatic benefits for the customer.

The purchase is part of a well-defined company policy at Stephens & George, of continual re-investment in the latest technology. “During the pandemic, we realised the need for a new press, in order to give us an edge over competition,” says Andrew Jones, fourth generation Managing Director of the company based in Merthyr Tydfil.

Paul Enoch, Director of Press Production at Stephens & George, adds: “The new machine will give us the edge we need, and the opportunity to push the boundaries and leap past 75 million sheets to over 80 million sheets per annum. We can monitor the data automatically from Heidelberg Assistant delivering KPI based information for all of the presses we have and we also receive predictive monitoring service support and much more from Heidelberg.”

“This new investment from Stephens & George is fresh evidence of the long-term partnership we have created. It showcases the undeniable fact that Heidelberg equipment is a sound investment, even during these challenging times. Our relationship has only strengthened during COVID – Heidelberg has been providing all our customers, including Stephens & George, with full technical support and the highest level of service at all times,” says Ryan Miles, Managing Director at Heidelberg UK.

Stephens & George operates a 24x7 production service and attributes 40% of its work to magazines, 40% to commercial contracts and 20% to other one-off jobs.
