Two Welsh printers, Pensord Press in Blackwood and its sister company Cambrian Printers in Aberystwyth, will each take a new Polar 115N Plus next month.
Karl Gater, group operations director, says: “Cutting is an area which is least analysed and looked at but which is absolutely critical to production. The guillotines take work from litho and digital presses and feed so many functions including laminating, stitching and binding and they are also a backup for the automatic trimmers, too.”
The Pensord installation is a like for like 115cm guillotine swap but the Cambrian Polar 115N Plus replaces a 137cm width machine.
“For B1, the 115cm configuration is just right and these guillotines give us the latest technology, replacing kit that is 10 to 15 years old,” says Mr Gater. “The technology has changed and we like to invest and keep up to date. Although the guillotine will affect few staff it is welcomed by the operators because the touchscreen, programming and Optiknife knife changing make it easy equipment to operate.”
Pensord Press employs 120 staff and runs 24/7 to produce over 380 regular publications for 240 publishers. It mails out over 6 million packages a year.
