Founded in 1995, Joemai Co. Ltd. is a communications-driven print service provider that goes beyond traditional printing to deliver strategic solutions aligned with modern market demands. As customer needs continue to evolve and diversify, Joemai is responding with a clear focus on in-house production and operational optimization—reforming its factory workflows and modernizing its pressroom to stay ahead of the curve.
To improve efficiency and reduce operational costs, Joemai recently upgraded its aging fleet, as some presses had been in use for over 20 years. A key reason behind the investment in the new Speedmaster SX 102 was to boost productivity and minimize maintenance, while relying on the robust local support and service from HEIDELBERG Japan.
In January 2024, the company installed a four-color Speedmaster SX 102 (Version 92): this perfecting press features a 650 × 940 mm plate format, which provides a significant cost advantage amid rising plate prices.
Previously running at an average of 6,000 to 7,000 sheets per hour, Joemai’s pressroom saw an immediate 50% increase in production speed with the new press. The in-house production team is targeting the press’s top speed of 14,000 sheets per hour as they gain more experience. Meanwhile, makeready times (including color matching) have already been cut in half, thanks to the Prinect workflow from HEIDELBERG.
“Our goal is to continue improving production efficiency by reducing waste even further,” said Deputy Factory Manager Tatsuo Kuramoto. “We’re also exploring the possibility of a one-operator-per-machine setup in the near future.”
Joemai’s modernization efforts go beyond printing. The company has also invested in new cutting, folding, and saddle-stitching equipment to bring more postpress processes in-house. This shift has already reduced outsourcing costs and created additional value for customers by enabling faster turnaround, tighter quality control, and more responsive service.
“Although we’re still in the early stages of transitioning to full in-house production, we see significant long-term benefits,” said Production Director Shunsuke Fujita. “Even with the new equipment, we’ve maintained output levels without increasing staff. That shows how much more efficient our operations have become.”
Mr. Fujita also noted that eliminating production bottlenecks and minimizing outsourcing will continue to be key priorities in Joemai’s growth strategy.
Joemai’s approach reflects a unique philosophy: valuing traditional craftsmanship and modern technology equally. The investment in new equipment is part of the company’s commitment to offering clients creative alternatives and forward-thinking solutions—while remaining grounded in quality, skill, and service excellence.
