As part of the 175th anniversary celebrations, Jürgen Otto, CEO of HEIDELBERG, reflects in his speech on what defines the company — and outlines the path ahead: technological excellence, consistent digitalization, and new growth areas that reach beyond the print industry.

A message about purpose, responsibility, and the future.

"For 175 years, HEIDELBERG has stood for technological excellence, customer focus, and a pioneering spirit unlike any other. What began in 1850 as a vision to take print quality to a new level has grown over generations into a company that continues to set global standards.

Our story is marked by innovation and a deeply rooted drive to keep improving. Our customers are proud to work with HEIDELBERG — and our employees are proud to be part of it. That spirit continues to define us today."

Technology with character – then and now

"From early on, we have set technological benchmarks. The Original Heidelberg Platen Press from 1921 still prints today, and can even be equipped with modern NFC technology. It’s proof that our machines are built to last and remain part of a continuous evolution.

The legendary demo bus from the 1950s is another expression of our approach: customer focus is not a slogan, it’s lived practice. We go where our customers are. That mindset remains central, at our Home of Print and with our partners around the globe."

A company is only as strong as its people

"What defines HEIDELBERG isn’t just our machines—it’s the people who build them, sell them, service them, and improve them every day. Many of our employees have been with us for decades—25, 40 years of service are not uncommon. Their experience and loyalty are a true asset, especially in today’s competitive labor market.

We don’t just offer advanced technology, we offer purpose. Our people identify with what they do, and they stay because they know HEIDELBERG is more than a workplace. It’s a place where technology and responsibility go hand in hand."

Champions League – also internationally

"HEIDELBERG thinks and acts globally. We recognized early on the importance of markets like China and the United States. Today, we are not just present — we are leaders. Our performance remains unmatched, even in an increasingly complex environment.

Through strategic partnerships — such as with MK Masterwork in China — we pursue one clear goal: to offer our customers the best possible solutions. Locally produced, locally supported, globally networked."

Digitalization is not a choice — it's a reality

"As early as the year 2000, we began connecting our machines to the internet — well before “Industry 4.0” became a buzzword. Today, our digital solutions go far beyond print. We connect machines, analyze real-time data, and create transparency and efficiency for our customers.

Our Data Lab in Wiesloch evaluates data from over 11,000 machines worldwide every day. These insights help customers better understand their own performance, both in comparison with others and within their own operations. This enables them to work more efficiently, more productively, and more competitively."

More than printing: A second pillar for the future

"Our expertise in mechanics, electronics, software, power electronics, and service is unique. And it can be used in more than just printing. With Amperfied, for example, we offer charging solutions for electric mobility. Our capabilities can be transferred to many other industries.

In a world where delivery reliability and quality standards are becoming increasingly important, our locations in Germany are a real advantage. We offer not only technology, but also reliability — and increasingly in new markets outside the printing industry as well."

Investing in the future

"At our 175th anniversary, we’re not only celebrating the past, we’re investing purposefully in what lies ahead. To this end, we have created the world's largest demonstration printing center. Here, customers can test machines with our experts, optimize processes, and help define new standards.

We are also returning to the very large format: with the new Cartonmaster CX 145, we are once again entering the 145 format. This machine is available to order now and represents our commitment to not only being the largest supplier, but also a technological leader."

Technological openness as a principle

"HEIDELBERG stands for a wide range of solutions. We offer every technology that is best suited to an application. We also integrate systems from other manufacturers into our workflows via our open Prinect workflow.

Because our goal is clear: we want to find the optimal solution for our customers – regardless of where the technology comes from. That’s how true integration grows from diversity."

Thank you for your trust, loyalty, and honest feedback

"Our story would be unthinkable without our customers, partners, and employees. Many families have worked with HEIDELBERG for generations. This connection is both a motivation and a responsibility.

So we say thank you: for your loyalty, for your trust, and for your candid feedback. Because only through open dialogue and shared ambition can we shape the next 175 years: as a reliable partner, a technological leader, and the Home of Print."
