“The crash of our old 8-colour perfecting press made us realize the full potential of our new Heidelberg CX 104-5+LX press – we went from printing 1 mill impressions per month to 3,6 mill per month.” – Janni Toft Nielsen, CEO, KLS PurePrint
During the latest 12 months KLS PurePrint has reached a total of 43,5 mill impressions (avg. run length 6.394) thereby making it the most productive CX 104 press in Europe.
Until 2023, KLS PurePrint’s core business was producing cradle-to-cradle certified magazines and brochures for the Scandinavian market. At that time, the company was operating a 1998 Heidelberg CD 102-5+L and an 8-colour competitor perfecting press. In 2022, KLS revised its strategy and decided to diversify by adding folding carton packaging production as a new business area. To support this shift, the company invested in a new Heidelberg CX 104-5+LX press and a Diana Easy 115 folder-gluer, while retiring the old CD 102.
After the installation of the CX 104, the company ran two sheetfed offset presses in parallel: the 8-colour perfecting press primarily for magazine and brochure signatures, and the CX 104 for covers and folding cartons. During its first year in production, the CX 104 averaged 1 million impressions per month.
However, in May 2024, a major setback occurred when the perfecting press suffered a severe crash, rendering it unusable for six months while insurance negotiations dragged on. Outsourcing production was not a viable option, as it would have threatened the company’s financial stability. Instead, KLS decided to put the Heidelberg CX 104 to the ultimate test and see if it could really deliver on Heidelberg’s initial promises of productivity.
One year later, the results speak for themselves: the Heidelberg CX 104 at KLS PurePrint has proven to be the most productive CX 104 press in Europe. With this success, KLS PurePrint has chosen not to replace the damaged 8-color perfecting press. As a positive result the company is now operating as a leaner, more efficient, and more profitable business.
