Joemai Co., Ltd. founded in 1995, aims to provide optimal communication tools for its clients by focusing on the present and anticipating future trends, rather than relying solely on past experiences. As the value systems of individuals rapidly diversify and clients' challenges become increasingly complex, the company expands its business by offering superior services beyond the boundaries of printing. Joemai is now undertaking a reform to optimize its factory operations through inhouse roduction.
The company decided to upgrade its printing machines, which had been in use for over 20 years, to improve the productivity, streamline operations, and reduce operating costs. One of the primary reasons for the purchase of the new Speedmaster was to enhance overall output and productivity while minimizing maintenance costs and the guarantee of a robust support from HEIDELBERG Japan.
In January 2024, Joemai installed the Speedmaster SX 102 Version 92, a four-color, double-sided printing machine. One of the standout features of this machine is its 650 x 940 mm plate size, offering significant cost advantages amidst rising plate prices. The printing plant, which previously operated at an average speed of 6,000 to 7,000 sheets per hour, has now increased production speed by 50% with the new Speedmaster SX 102.
As the inhouse production team gains more experience, they aim to achieve a maximum production speed of 14,000 sheets per hour. Preparation times, including color matching, have already been halved with the new HEIDELBERG Prinect workflow. Deputy Factory Manager Tatsuo Kuramoto expressed the company’s goal to further improve production efficiency by further reducing paper waste and potentially implementing a one-man one machine operation in the future.
The recent equipment investment extends beyond the printing machines. The cutting, folding, and saddle-stitching machines were introduced to reduce outsourcing costs by bringing processes in-house. In addition to cost savings, in-house production strengthens the company’s appeal as a communication-focused business. Managing quality internally ensures quick response times, reduces dependency on external vendors, and fosters the accumulation of knowledge and skills within the company thus enhancing its long-term credibility and value.
Production Director Shunsuke Fujita emphasized that while the company is still in the early stages of inhouse production, it sees great potential benefits in this approach. He noted that, despite the new equipment, they have been able to maintain production levels without increasing staff, demonstrating improved workforce efficiency. Mr. Fujita also highlighted the importance of eliminating production bottlenecks and achieving cost savings through reduced outsourcing as a long-term challenge and opportunity for growth.
Joemai’s challenge of treating traditional craftsmanship and new technologies as equally valuable forms of expression, while daring to propose alternative approaches to customers, is also reflected in this recent investment in new equipment.
