A cooperative path to success

“We have been impressed by the productivity, reliability, and efficiency of Speedmaster presses ever since we started working with them,” says Juan Miguel Serres, 2nd Vice-President and General Secretary of Cevagraf, a cooperative commercial print shop based in Rubí, near Barcelona. “We usually work with the Speedmaster XL 75-10-P at speeds of between 10,000 and 14,000 sheets. This, combined with rapid makeready processes, means we can reach up to five job changes per hour.” But it isn’t just this Peak Performance press that Cevagraf benefits from. It has a further four presses at its disposal – a Speedmaster CD 74, two Speedmaster SM 74 units, and one Speedmaster SM 52 have also contributed to the Spanish cooperative’s enthusiasm for this technology.

Cevagraf, which won first prize in the “Be unbeatable. Be a Speedmaster” video competition, is a print shop run as a cooperative that currently has 41 members and 5 staff. Also active in other business areas, the company’s graphic production section focuses on brochures, flyers, leaflets, catalogs, magazines, and books, primarily for local customers but also for companies elsewhere in Europe. “Our corporate culture – and this is something we also try to communicate to new members – has always involved promoting cooperative business models combined with generating profit. This may sound like a contradiction, but it isn’t,” says Albert Alcoverro, the cooperative’s President.

Even companies that work as cooperatives are geared toward growth so that staff can continue to be paid a sufficient salary for a good standard of living. For this reason, Cevagraf has recently conducted a comprehensive self-review. “We have cut administrative processes and bureaucracy and instead increased the number of employees in production processes. All these factors have helped us to offer better prices and generate more capacity for processing new jobs,” says Albert Alcoverro. These additional jobs come from a new online sales initiative.
