Over 300 participants from twelve European countries attended the Prinect User Days 2014 in Heidelberg this fall. They found the concept of users organizing presentations and workshops for other users interesting and worthwhile.
The opening presentation by media and market research consultant Michael Pusler entitled “Communication in the 21st century: online & print – competition or cooperation?” confirmed that print still has a future and will retain its status as a key communication medium. However, the coexistence and cooperation of print and online media will shape new business models.
New possibilities for boosting efficiency provided by the latest version of the Prinect print shop workflow from Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG were a key focal point. The current version is much easier to operate and far faster, especially in the case of larger jobs with over 2,000 pages.
Some of the discussions relating to the new ISO 12647-2 standard were quite animated. Many questions remain as regards the outlay involved in rolling out the new standard and how it will be implemented. Participants were able to obtain valuable information during discussions with Karl Michael Meinecke from the bvdm (German Printing and Media Industries Federation), who heads up the German delegation on the ISO committee. The bvdm is aiming to supply the remaining new ICC profiles and a revised PSO (process standard for offset printing) complete with instructions by the end of the year.
The record number of 35 workshops covered an extremely wide range of topics – from new automation possibilities and multicolor technology in conjunction with Anicolor technology to the Prinect Business Manager. Innovations included the first Prinect digital front end, database-assisted publishing, and ISO-compliant reports. Information was also provided on how to deal with PDF/X-4, the integration status of Prinect, and web-to-print tools. Live Prinect demonstrations rounded off the agenda.
As always, there was plenty of time for networking and discussions with other participants/Prinect users and the developers. This close contact is particularly helpful for fast, targeted further development of Prinect and therefore works to the benefit of all Prinect users.
