Reliable Speedmaster XL output remains critical to ESP’s marcomms strategy

08/01/2015

Average makeready times will reduce from three and a half minutes to just two minutes and a further 15 to 20 hours production time a week will be secured following the replacement of a Speedmaster XL 105-4+L with a Speedmaster XL 106-4+L at ESP The Colour Hub over the Christmas period.

“The marginal format size increase isn’t significant to us but press developments have been significant in the last three years and on this press we have specified Autoplate XL automated plate changing and that will give us the additional time saving in set up,” says Paul Bradley of ESP.

“We have Inpress Control on the XL 106-5+LX we already run and we would not order any new press without it. It is a staggeringly efficient automated colour and register control tool which cuts time and material waste and optimises colour to the most stringent parameters.”

Matt Rockley, press product manager at Heidelberg UK, says: “These time savings will be a big asset for ESP. We already knew that the Intellistart software and the new blanket wash developments on the Speedmaster XL 106 could give them as much as 1.3 weeks additional production per year.”

ESP has extended into creative design, digital printing and Web2Print operations, becoming more of a marcomms group with focus on not only production automation but transaction automation also. It is attracting new business as a result. Its holistic approach means it can meet the multimedia expectations of the largest groups but continue to offer an even more comprehensive service to its Print Management clients.

Printing remains an important element of the mix and means that ESP needs and expects productive equipment it can rely on. It is testament to the XL productivity that the three year old Speedmaster XL 105 going out has over 200 million impressions to its name. The company has a three year press cycle, recognising that in having the very latest press technology it always remains highly competitive.

The new press is a four colour and coater. It already has a Speedmaster XL 106-5+L to cope with demand for specials but as 90% of its work is CMYK process there was no need for more than four colour units.

“We take out a three year extended warranty when we buy a new press because we know Heidelberg’s responsiveness is good. The company is our preferred supplier because of the effectiveness of the machines, their uptime and reliability. It’s that simple,” says Paul Bradley.

The new press was installed over the Christmas break, meaning there was minimal disruption to normal production.
