Graphic Packaging commissions high spec, high speed Speedmaster giant

21/10/2014

The UK’s first 18,000sph Speedmaster XL 145 is currently being commissioned by Graphic Packaging International in Leeds. The Speedmaster XL145-6+LX will be running at full production speed from next month.

“We looked at other options but our experience with the existing XL 105 and the performance it has given us over the last six years, coupled with the technological developments on the XL 145, were convincing reasons for going again with Heidelberg,” says Dean Naylor, plant manager of Graphic Packaging. “Our experience of Heidelberg’s advice, service and support has been first class.”

The makeready and running speed, colour quality and overall production control were all factors in the decision making.

It is a very highly specified machine. Logistics material handling is built around the press to take pallets of board in and finished work away from the press. This replicates the XL 105 and it also reduces the physical and manual aspect for the operators which results in clear Health & Safety benefits.

The XL 105 featured Image Control but on the XL 145 press Graphic Packaging has opted for Inpress Control, which will automate the register and colour control. Color Assistant Pro allows the company to calibrate to ensure consistent and repeatable colour, vital in a brand conscious market.

“Inpress Control will speed up makeready, reduce waste and enhance quality. Quality is something we are able to market and offer to all our customers in the packaging sector,“ says Dean. “We have the added benefit of Color Assistant Pro. Customers value their brand and expect quality and colour as a prerequisite.”

Other features that will reduce downtime and enhance throughput include simultaneous wash up and ink pumping.

Recognising that a press can only ever be as good as its operators, Graphic Packaging has also invested in training with operators undertaking courses in Germany and Brentford during the ramp up period.

“The reaction from all employees has been 100% positive. This investment gives a great morale boost to the plant,” says Dean.
