Finger prints of Barrow-in-Furness will next month take delivery of a Speedmaster SX 74-4 LE-UV press and Allan Kerr, founder and managing director, welcomes the opportunity to say, “goodbye to spray powder and all the associated maintenance that goes with it”!
The press, which will be installed in the company’s production hub in Cumbria, will produce a wide range of print to support the organisation’s design and digital production branches in Cumbria, Wiltshire, Somerset and Lanarkshire, as well as its many local and national customers.
This completes its recent £1m upgrade, with the company investing in new digital, large format, pre-press, CTP and workflow, finishing, MIS and litho printing equipment. Mr Kerr says: “Initially we were unsure if LE-UV was the best fit for our company, but after looking at both conventional and LE-UV it became quite clear that the technology was advantageous.
“Our customers are used to the benefits of quick turnaround and colour accurate jobs from our digital devices; the UV technology will allow us to extend this to the larger volume jobs that were just too expensive to produce using digital technology.
“Initially we looked at four press suppliers but when it came to the final decision we found that Heidelberg was competitive on both capital and running costs. In addition, the operators were used to the Speedmaster technology. By upgrading our Prinect prepress software, we benefit from improved efficiencies and colour control. The press and workflow integrate perfectly to reduce make-ready times.”
“Over the past five or six years we have seen more of our customers work moving from litho production to digital. The introduction of LE-UV means we can achieve the speed of turnaround required today and with shortened make-ready times, reduced set up sheets and the ability to finish instantly we can migrate some work from our digital equipment back to litho. We will also benefit from there being no difference in colour because there is no dry back. The added benefit of removing spray powder from the printing process together with the dust and maintenance it causes will be a huge benefit,” he says.
The Speedmaster SX 74-4 is replacing a Speedmaster SM 74-5 (which the company purchased new from Heidelberg at Drupa 2008), eliminating one unit which had previously been used for seals. The instantly dry sheets achievable with the polymerisation of the LE-UV inks makes that unnecessary.
The Speedmaster SX 74 is a 15,000sph press which handles sheets of 530 x 740cm and handles stocks of 0.03 to 0.6mm thickness. The Finger prints machine will feature the higher pile (1,160mm) delivery.
It is anticipated that the SX 74 will give up to 20% increased litho capacity with the ability to work with a much wider range of both coated and uncoated materials.
Finger prints customer base includes local, national and international businesses of all sizes, graphic designers, local authorities and NHS trusts. With such a diverse customer base comes the requirement to produce a diverse range of products and the new press will be used initially to produce ink on paper products, but the company will look at introducing print onto other substrates after the initial bedding in period.
Heidelberg UK is enjoying great success with its LE-UV technology across B1 and B2 and the full range of Speedmaster options.
