Spectrum Printing to be first in Wales with latest Heidelberg B2 press

27/09/2017

Spectrum Printing will be the first Welsh company to buy a Speedmaster CX 75. The launch of this new mid-range flexible B2 press deterred the Cardiff company from buying from a rival manufacturer or taking a second-hand Heidelberg model.

“We feel that the Speedmaster CX 75 features the best elements of the XL 75 but with a price tag that is more attractive,” says Lawrence Corria, managing director. “In particular we like the double circumference impression cylinders, smaller machine footprint and affordable colour control. This is a machine that will allow us to continue to offer our customers very high print quality but with quicker turnrounds and competitive pricing.”

It has specified a four-colour configuration plus coating and EasyControl spectral measurement to allow it to run at 15,000sph with consistent quality. The company is also updating its CTP device and looking to implement Prinect workflow connectivity between prepress and press.

As lead printer in the All Wales Printing Services Framework (Lot 2) for medium volume print, Spectrum Print handles work for the Welsh Assembly Government, Welsh councils and other government-funded organisations as well as design agencies and a variety of businesses throughout the UK.

Having the right equipment to serve its markets is vital and with the new Speedmaster CX 75-4+L it can trade out two presses and still have better productivity.

“With this latest technology we will reduce makeready times, have a faster running speed and will be more productive,” says Mr Corria. “The double circumference cylinder means we have the ability to handle a wide range of stocks, including heavy 0.6mm boards and the rolling power will give our customers the great printed results they expect from us.”

The efficiency and colour control will be enhanced by the introduction of Prinect Pressroom Manager, which will allow the company to create job profiles and send them direct to press, as well as the EasyControl spectral measurement system which can measure and log specific Pantone colours.

The Speedmaster CX 75 will also help the company achieve greater sustainability goals, a continuing quest for businesses like Spectrum Printing which has ISO14001 environmental accreditation.

“By running one press instead of two we will reduce waste (especially with the shorter makereadies) as well as energy, chemistry and other consumables,” says Mr Corria.

Spectrum Printing is based in the heart of Cardiff and it employs 18 staff and has a turnover of around £1.2m.
