Laser Graphics switches from HP Indigo to Heidelberg Versafire CV

11/01/2017

Lower service charges were key to Laser Graphics’ decision to switch from HP Indigo to Heidelberg Versafire CV technology. The new press was installed over the Christmas break.

“We replaced our HP Indigo because it was reaching the end of its service contract. Heidelberg is a well-known brand and the Versafire CV proven technology so we had confidence in switching,” says Bill Smyth, founder and managing director of the Milton Keynes business.

“The cost of ownership was a major factor. Because the service charges are minimal compared to HP, we can produce at lower prices than we could before and handle longer run lengths.

“We can now print white on coloured stock or apply clear or spot varnish straight off the press. The same applies to printing standard envelope sizes. In addition to standard SRA3 format we can also print onto a longer sheet size of 320 x 700mm which will accommodate 6pp A4 portrait leaflets and landscape A4 leaflets and brochures.”

This is the company’s first purchase from Heidelberg but it is impressed with the service. It can hold common parts on the shelf to reduce downtime and the help desk and engineer to site response times have reassured Laser Graphics that this switch makes sense. Three operators have been trained to run the press and found it very straightforward.

“The installation and training went smoothly and to schedule and the operators were whizzing work out even before the training was completed,” says Mr Smyth. “Our customers will benefit from our new cost structure, ability to handle longer runs and I have no doubt they will be creative in the way they use the new formats and varnishes.”

The business was set up in 1988 by Bill Smyth and since then Laser Graphics has established a niche in event products and has wide format technology as well. It also offers stationery and marketing collateral and a wide range of commercial print.

Both his wife and son are employed in the business, good succession planning. Most of its work is generated within 50 miles of the Milton Keynes print shop.
