Westdale exits web to focus on high end sheetfed printing

14/09/2015

Westdale Press has moved out of web printing to concentrate on its high quality sheetfed operations, describing web print pricing as “laughable”.

The M-600 web was replaced last month by its third Heidelberg long perfector, a Speedmaster XL 106-8-P with the faster Inpress Control 2 register and colour control system, Autoplate XL simultaneous plate changing and CutStar reel to sheet device.

“We will source web print for some customers who have asked us to do so but our manufacturing focus moving forward will be on high end sheetfed,” says Alan Padbury, managing director of Westdale. “We did well with web following the global economic crisis but seasonality, diminishing volumes and the extraordinary prices being offered in the market means that we get no more return from our web press than we do from a stitcher.”

The Cardiff company elected to install an eight-colour to run alongside its two ten-colour presses because 40% of its work is on uncoated stock, which doesn’t require a seal, and rarely features a fifth-colour. The eight-colour will also handle straight six plus seal work.

“The Speedmaster XL 106 prints beautifully. Heidelberg’s long perfectors are unchallenged in the market and what I most respect about Heidelberg is its structure which allows it to provide the support for what are very complicated modern machines.”

Press peripherals supplier technotrans has also installed an extension to the company’s ink pumping system and a central cooling system which creates a better and more productive environment.

The company handles high end quality work, brochures, mail order, calendars and some coffee table magazines. It is a 24 hour operation.
