Belmont Press makes plans for a 2016 debut in B2 format

28/08/2015

Belmont Press will make its return to B2 at the turn of the year. A new 18,000sph Speedmaster XL 75-5+L with Inpress Control will replace a B3 five-colour and a B1 ten-colour press.

“Our B3 press has been squeezed out by two digital presses on the one hand and the faster makeready, more flexible B2 Speedmaster technology on the other,” says Trevor Thomas, managing director of the Northampton company.

Belmont Press is a B1 powerhouse with 12-, 10-, 8- and 4-colour Speedmasters outputting a range of high quality commercial and section print. It outputs about 300 million items of print a year.

The company has always been proud of the standard of its colour, verified by its ISO 12647-2 certification, membership of the Heidelberg Colour Club and its ability to provide Hexachrome work.

Heidelberg’s Inpress Control spectral and register measurement and adjustment tool will be important in its quest for consistency throughout a run and from run to run on the new press. Along with Autoplate Pro, a new fully automated plate changing system from Heidelberg, it will also reduce makeready times and waste, tools for greater efficiency.

“We are continually on the look-out for equipment that will improve our productivity. We have been with Heidelberg since 1962 but we have had other presses. At the moment I don’t believe there is another press on the market to match the Speedmaster technology. This investment gives us the benefit of coating that we want and need, in particular the speed of turnround to allow us to respond quickly. Having B2 will free up the larger format presses to do the work that best suits them,” says Mr Thomas.

An innovative company, Belmont Press likes to adopt new technology and it pinpoints another machine that has transformed its throughput over the past 12 months, the Heidelberg Stahlfolder with revolutionary PFX feeder. This enables us to stream feed the folder; this can increase productivity by up to 30% over conventional machines. “This latest Stahlfolder has made an incredible difference to productivity and gives us 18pp sections instead of the usual 16pp”, says Mr Thomas.

Belmont Press operates double day shifts across the week with a night shift to give 24 hour working on four of the days.

The company offers litho, commercial and wide format digital, print management and fulfilment services. It handled 13 million items for the London Olympics in 2012, typical of the high profile companies and brands it works with. That said, it puts an emphasis on giving good service on jobs of all sizes and types and for all its customers. Indeed it even runs free Print Essentials Workshops to help print buyers develop new skills and keep abreast of technological developments.
