A year after making its step up to B2 production, Vale Press has returned to place an order with Heidelberg UK for a second identical Speedmaster SX 74-5 with Easy Control spectral measurement.
The company has seen its turnover rise 40% to £3.9m over the last year and with the greater capacity of the new press annual sales should top £5m during 2016.
The intention last year had been that the first SX 74-5 would replace one of the company’s two Speedmaster SX52-5 presses. In fact, print demand was such that both B3 machines had to be retained but once the latest B2 press is installed at the end of July one will go out. The fifth colour on each press is used 90% of the time to seal work.
To house the press Vale Press has invested in a ninth industrial unit on the business park in the Cotswolds (each press has its own freehold building) and the increase in print capacity has also led Vale Press to purchase a second CtP device and another combination folder.
The Suprasetter A 52 will draw off all the B3 plate production to relieve pressure on the Suprasetter A 75 which is currently outputting 5,000 plates a month. The automated Stahlfolder KH 66 will ensure work continues through the post press area concentrating on folded section work to feed the company’s Stitchmaster ST350 which was installed last year
The investment in building and equipment represents an investment of £850,000. Vale Press is employing two more operators this summer, bringing staff levels to 30. The press minders will at first gain experience on the first SX 74 and will have the benefit of expert Heidelberg training when the new press is installed.
“We are returning to Heidelberg for this second B2 press because the first has been such a success,” says Tom Stowe, managing director. “It has given us flexibility and enabled us to handle longer runs. It has meant we have been able to take on more work for existing clients and to add new customers. We are once again at the point of having to turn work away so we will be pleased to have the press in and running in readiness for the busy period from September on.”
Enhancing that quality and speeding up makeready is Easy Control, Heidelberg’s entry level spectrophotometer which can read and retain for re-use Pantone colour data which is very helpful for special and brand colours. The company uses Pressroom Manager for data transfer.
Both Speedmaster SX 74s will run 24/7 with the remaining SX 52 running 16 hours a day. The company handles a mix of trade and direct work, including demanding fine art and commercial contracts.
