Looking ahead:

WHAT WE’RE WORKING ON

Whether in the print shop, on the production floor, or within the customer portal — HEIDELBERG has been driving digitalization and automation in the printing industry for over 20 years.

The future belongs to intelligent, connected printing. And the path forward is clear: More cloud. More connectivity. More data. More AI. More robotics. More automation.

What does that look like in practice? Find out here.

Smart assistants

HEIDELBERG presses are packed with smart features that enable guided and autonomous printing. Take the Hycolor Assistant, which helps achieve perfect color settings, or Intellistart 3, which automates job changes for maximum efficiency. These systems are powered by intelligent algorithms that can automatically configure complex production parameters.

The AI expertise of HEIDELBERG is also built into many other smart features across our equipment. Since its debut in 2016, Push to Stop has redefined pressroom operations: what used to require manual starts by the operator now runs automatically. The operator only steps in when needed.

More efficiency through big data & the Cloud

The HEIDELBERG Cloud is a key pillar of our digital strategy. It launched back in 2004 — the same time we started connecting presses to the internet. Since then, HEIDELBERG has been analyzing data from our global installed base. Today, around 11,000 machines worldwide are sending data that helps us improve service, maintenance, and machine performance.

It’s also the key to higher efficiency and profitability: with smart data and automation, fewer personnel are required — a major advantage in times of skilled labor shortages.

Automation & artificial intelligence

From Performance Advisor Technology and the Prinect Chatbot to digital shop floor management, HEIDELBERG is using AI to transform the printing industry. Machine-learning algorithms are making life easier for customers, production staff, and service technicians alike.

At HEIDELBERG, digitalization and automation aren’t just about software — our machines are at the heart of it. This includes not only the press itself but also prepress equipment (like plate imaging) and postpress solutions. The result: a fully autonomous pressroom that helps print shops meet the challenges of the 21st century.

Digital twins

Digital twin systems are a core concept of Industry 4.0. They’re designed to simulate and analyze physical assets or processes — virtually — to improve performance. At HEIDELBERG, we use digital twins to evaluate and optimize production steps for individual components.

Our experts also analyze complex system behavior using models and real-world data from test benches, prototypes, or field machines. This allows us to drive innovation faster and support our customers more efficiently.

Industrial robotics

Robots can boost productivity in the printing industry — especially when skilled workers are in short supply. These powerful and intelligent assistants help automate workflows and significantly improve efficiency.

HEIDELBERG focuses on intuitive collaboration between humans and machines. One example is the StackStar C, our flexible cobot. This mobile, collaborative robot supports postpress operations and works side by side with people.

Need even more power? For high-volume production, we offer the StackStar P, an autonomous industrial robot that flips and stacks folded signatures — moving up to 7 tons of paper per hour.

We’re continuing to push the boundaries of automation and digital integration across end-to-end processes.

Our goal: performance that’s independent of the operator. That means using operators where they truly add value — and letting intelligent systems handle the rest.

With smart process monitoring and predictive maintenance, we help prevent unplanned downtime. And with AI-driven production planning, we ensure production is continuously optimized. In some cases, this can even lead to fully autonomous workflows — the lights are off, but the press keeps running.
