A Treasure Trove in Bristol, UK
Hidden away in a small back street of Bristol, UK is a real gem.
A small family-run print company called Doveton Press managed by
two brothers, Mark and Gavin Savage.
In Victorian times (the 19th Century) part of their print
shop was a jail and, at first glance, you wonder how everything
fits into this compact factory. But their output and
industrialisation is incredible. If you want to talk to Mark, you
have to do it on the move.
In September 2007, Doveton installed the UK's second
Speedmaster SM 52 Anicolor press. A four-colour with coater, and
they have never looked back. So much so that since then Doveton
have upgraded their old Speedmaster SM 74 press to a drupa
specification Speedmaster SM 74-4-L, and installed a new
fully-automated Suprasetter A75 out-putting around 3,000
chemistry-free plates every month.
It needs to, because Doveton operate on a two and three-shift
basis each week and quickly produce short-to-medium run work for
locally based customers. Mark Savage, the head of production, is so
amazed at the productivity of the Anicolor press he cannot help but
compare it to his older conventional Speedmaster SM 52-4, which
during its seven-year life has amassed 25.2 million impressions.
Compare that to the 18-month-old Anicolor which has already
produced 23.7 million and you realise this is one happy, but very
busy printer!
"We tend to clean the screen rollers thoroughly every
two weeks and that's fine", says Mark. "We've not even
had need for ultrasonic cleaning. Maintenance may take a couple of
extra hours each week, but with so much work coming off of the
press, that's OK".
He is also very pleased with the performance of their new
Speedmaster SM 74-4-L. "When it came in we also installed
prepress interface and life is so much easier now. It is all so
easy. I have had nothing thrown back at me. The quality is
spot-on".
Doveton Press now have FSC and PEFC accreditation and are
looking to move forward to get ISO standards for both colour and
the environment.
In this day and age when business can be difficult and
stressful, it is really pleasing to see such a small company
"increasing the workload on our presses, up and
up."...The words of Mark Savage, who is clearly pleased with
his Heidelberg investments.
