New perfect binder attracts customers

The Eurobind 4000 is characterized by its short makeready times, high net output and exceptional quality even in short runs. The Interak print shop in Czarnków in north-west Poland is convinced of the benefits of the new perfect binder from Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG (Heidelberg). In nine months, the company has already produced over 2.5 million bindings using the Eurobind 4000.

Czarnków near Posen is a picture-postcard town with 13,000 inhabitants. Yet this idyllic location recently played host to a world premiere when Interak became the first print shop to use the new Eurobind 4000 perfect binder from Heidelberg in production. The acquisition of the perfect binder followed a change in business strategy. In the first ten years following its foundation in 1989, the print shop focused on providing comprehensive support to its customers in the design and planning stages of their advertising materials. "Since 1999, we have moved quite clearly towards press and postpress. We now concentrate on the production of top quality books, catalogs and commercial jobs. To this end, we have invested in a range of cutting-edge machinery," explains Andrzej Krzewina, Managing Director of Interak. In 1999, the print shop was the first in Poland to install a CtP system. Since November 2005, the company has also installed an eight-color Speedmaster SM 102, a five-color Speedmaster CD 102 with coating unit and a four-color Speedmaster SM 102 with CutStar sheeter.

4,000 copies per hour
In September 2006, only a few months after the Eurobind 4000 went on public show for the first time at Ipex 2006 in Birmingham, the perfect binder was already on its way to Czarnków. “We chose the Eurobind 4000 because we were impressed by the high levels of productivity and quality,” said Andrzej Krzewina. The new perfect binder from Heidelberg is largely automated and, depending on the product, can process up to 4,000 copies per hour. This is of particular benefit to Interak as the print shop deals with many short and medium runs in a diverse range of formats. The Eurobind 4000’s repertoire includes products with a block height of 140-450 millimeters, a block width of 100-320 millimeters, and block thicknesses of between two and 60 millimeters. "Now we can also process complex print products in Otabind versions or Swiss brochures," added Andrzej Krzewina.

PUR and hotmelt glue
One technical highlight of the Eurobind 4000 is the separation of its tools. At precisely defined points in the process, Heidelberg's perfect binder concentrates on equalizing, notching, roughening and brushing. "This means that each single step does not have a negative impact on any other step in the process and does not therefore dilute the quality of the product," explained Andrzej Krzewina. His colleagues have responded enthusiastically to the user-friendliness of the Eurobind 4000. The job and presetting data can be sent directly to the perfect binder via the Prinect Workflow and captured in a management information system for actual costing. In addition, personnel are able to alter all of the parameters even when running at full production speed. Andrzej Krzewina also feels that flexibility is an important factor. "The Eurobind 4000 allows us to alternate rapidly between PUR and hotmelt glue. The binder’s roller and nozzle systems can be swapped over very quickly and easily."

Over 2.5 million bindings
The Eurobind 4000 configuration in use at Interak consists of twelve stations, a gluer, cooling system and three-side trimmer. At the special request of the print shop in Czarnków, Heidelberg also fitted the perfect binder with a barcode-reading system. In a period of only nine months, Interak used the Eurobind 4000 to produce over 2.5 million bindings of various types, some of them very complex. "More and more customers are showing an interest in our new binding technology, particularly telecommunication companies, cell phone manufacturers, the automotive industry and publishers. This naturally means that investing in the Eurobind 4000 has also been of economic benefit to us," said Andrzej Krzewina.
