Wachter GmbH, a company based in Bönnigheim near Stuttgart/
Germany which focuses on media technology, "full service"
and printing, was one of the first European concept customers for
the new Prinergy workflow management solution from Heidelberg and
Creo
Prinergy has been an integral part of Wachter GmbH's
production environment since the start of May. "Prinergy is
far faster than our existing workflow", states CEO Martin
Wachter, "it is stable and we can rely fully on the
results." Prinergy was naturally also used to produce the new
vision+work brochure "PDF-Workflow / Basics". This is the
first brochure in a new four-volume study series entitled
"vision+work" from Heidelberg and Creo and reports on the
opportunities for using the Adobe Portable Document Formats (PDF)
and the benefits of pure PDF workflows. The author is the renowned
PDF expert Stephan Jaeggi.
Focused on quality
The company was founded by Eugen Wachter in 1952 and has
since developed into far more than the original printshop. The
Communications section of Wachter GmbH develops innovative software
solutions, while the Electronic Media section supplies online
services, databases and database publishing services. Wachter GmbH
customers are also making increasing use of the company's
digital photo studio for fast, high quality packshots. The Prepress
section uses both computer-to-film and computer-to-plate and is
100% digital. Proofs are output on digital form proofers.
Wachter GmbH also employs cutting-edge technology in the
Print section. A digital press is used for printing-on-demand and
personalization. The Offset section is equipped with various small
offset presses, a five-color Speedmaster 52, a five-color
Speedmaster SM 102, two eight-color Speedmaster SM 102 presses (one
with additional coating unit) and a web offset press. The Finishing
section uses various folders and a gatherer-stitcher. Last but not
least, the company also offers concept-development services and
storage facilities.
With a workforce of 130 and its two CEOs Martin Wachter and
Claus Däuber, Wachter GmbH delivers high-quality work which
also finds delighted customers far outside the Stuttgart region.
Its annual turnover is in the region of DM 35 million.
"Presses cannot be allowed to stand around idle"
In view of Wachter GmbH's impressive machine park, it
came as no surprise when Martin Wachter immediately agreed to
Heidelberg's request at the start of the year to beta test
Prinergy. "I was looking for a workflow solution to help
overcome the prepress bottleneck", he explained. "Presses
cannot be allowed to stand around idle, so it's important that
prepress keeps up a continuous and reliable supply of press-ready
jobs."
And how is Prinergy faring today? "Things couldn't
be better", confirms Martin Wachter, "Prinergy gives us
the means to produce large quantities of plates quickly and
reliably and we make full use of the versatility built into
Prinergy. This is of particular advantage when last-minute changes
need to be made to imposition layouts". The ability to create
new signatures quickly and easily when required means that presses
can be used more efficiently.
Prinergy is currently driving a Trendsetter 3244 AL
(Autoload). The Gutenberg platesetter is soon to be replaced a
further Trendsetter. Prinergy will then be scaled up accordingly.
In the coming year, Wachter GmbH is looking to invest in a fully
automatic platesetter.
End-to-end workflow - complete with costing and billing
Martin Wachter is keen to extend Prinergy to the
organizational and costing aspects of order processing. "In
exactly the same way that job tickets are currently helping to
automate process routines, it ought to be possible one day to
incorporate key data about the customer, job preparation and job
billing into the job tickets. That will make Prinergy the complete
package I'm looking for".
He would also like to see the inclusion of tools for
finishing operations such as folding, gathering and adhesive
binding, and wants to be able to use CIP3/PPF to preset press ink
zones. All in all, he explains, the fact that Prinergy has an open
structure based on industry standards means that it meets all the
requirements necessary to make industrial production a reality in
the future.
