At Print 05 Heidelberg set to show a JDF-based link between the
Prinect workflow and digital printing workflow systems
For the first time, Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG
(Heidelberg) is presenting a future extension of its Prinect
workflow system at Print 05, which takes place from September 09 to
15 in Chicago. Using an open architecture based on the industry
standards JDF and PDF, Prinect is connected to leading
manufacturers' digital printing system workflows.
The solution on display at Print 05 will enable printshops
operating both offset presses and digital printing systems to take
advantage of the flexibility and cost benefits of the fully
integrated Prinect workflow when using digital printing.
Functions and customer benefits with the new Prinect interface
The new Prinect component will standardize the prepress
workflow for offset and digital printing, removing redundant
workflows and enabling both job types to be controlled together
through the production process. Standardization and automation of
the prepress processes will also lead to more reliable production
and shorter throughput times for digital printing too, with the
result that for short runs, preliminary runs, and print-on-demand
jobs, printshops can select the fastest and most cost-effective
print method or a combination of the two print methods as
appropriate. Production data from the digital printing system flows
back to the Prinect workflow, allowing the production status in
Prinect to be followed at any point.
"With JDF-based integration of digital printing systems into
the Prinect workflow, Heidelberg is closing a major gap on the road
to printshops achieving end-to-end integration. In the future,
Prinect will offer printers the flexibility to switch between print
processes, therefore allowing them to select the optimal production
solution. In this way, printshop processes can be standardized and
costs cut," says Dr. Peter Leu, Vice President Product Management
Prinect, explaining the benefits of the new Prinect component.
Heidelberg plans to roll out the linking between digital
workflow and Prinect in the first quarter of 2006.
The company will be showcasing the connectivity to the
workflow systems of the following digital print suppliers at Print
05:
-
HP Indigo Production Flow: Prinect communicates either
with HP Production Flow, which in its role as a workflow and
front-end system outputs jobs on the HP Indigo digital press, or
with HP Press Production Manager of an HP Indigo 5000.
-
Kodak NexPress: Prinect communicates with the KODAK
NEXSTATION front end, which manages the workflow on KODAK
NEXPRESS digital production color presses, as already shown at
drupa 2004 as part of a technology study.
-
Xerox FreeFlow: Xerox and Heidelberg demonstrated how
digital printing can work within offset environments, using the
Xerox FreeFlowTM Digital Workflow Collection and Prinect. Xerox
and Heidelberg showed job ticketing, pre-press, printing and
finishing integrated into one JDF pipeline, expediting workflow
from start to finish.
