New Scanning Solution Heidelberg Newcolor 5000 Extends Linoscan’s Performance Spectrum

09/20/2000

Professional quality standard is now also available for PC desktops - color and workflow expertise can be accessed at the click of a mouse.

The professional quality of the Linoscan series is now also available to PC users. In launching Newcolor 5000, Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG (Heidelberg) is presenting a new, stand-alone scanning solution for desktop scanners and a quality that has so far not been available on the desktop market. "With its new interface, an intelligent assistant concept, optimized algorithms and integrated Color Management, Newcolor 5000 finally provides the PC market with a whole range of features so far reserved for professional repro users. And because Newcolor 5000 is a stand-alone application, the user is not dependent on what can often be difficult Twain modules", states Ute Kleinschirkes, Product Manager for Newcolor 5000 and the Linoscan family. Creatives, smaller repro businesses and all users looking for professional quality will find the Newcolor 5000 the optimum solution to their needs.

ICC from A to Z Professional Color Management is essential for high-quality workflows. Newcolor 5000 has therefore been based entirely on the ICC standard (International Color Consortium) and the device-independent Lab color space. This is essential to ensure WYSIWYG representation (What-You-See-Is-What-You-Get) on the monitor. Definitive softproofs, even in CMYK, are no problem at all with the Newcolor 5000. True-color working is ensured thanks to integrated ICC profiles of popular film types and the use of scanner profiles which can be customized with the Scanopen option. Also integrated into the solution are demo versions of the Coloropen tools which can be unlocked using optional key codes.

Repro know-how and support at the press of a button Based on the Newcolor 7000 high-end solution unveiled so successfully at drupa in May, Newcolor 5000 makes Heidelberg's repro expertise available at the press of a button. The clearly arranged user interface has a logical structure which means that even less experienced users can quickly and easily familiarize themselves with the program. Extensive help functions and tool tips ensure success from the very first scan. However, experienced users will also find that they can adapt the software to their specific needs thanks to customized settings. Newcolor 5000 provides optimized definition and rotation functions in a quality normally reserved for high-end solutions. Helpful assistants provide the user with support and guide him automatically to the optimum result using precise settings. Color Assistant - a key success factor in the award-winning Linocolor scanning software for the Macintosh - analyzes each scan, sets image highlight and shadow, corrects color casts and proposes gradations and chroma profiles. Threshold Assistant automatically analyzes line scans to determine the black/white threshold for optimum representation. Manual adjustments are naturally also possible. Proven and powerful correction options in LCH allow the operator to process scanned images exactly how he sees them - in terms of lightness, chroma and hue.

Multitasking simplifies the workflow Newcolor 5000 runs all functions in parallel, exactly like the high-end version. Multitasking and multiprocessing ensure a fluid, effective workflow. The Freeze-View technology can be used to provide a permanent comparison of the original and corrected versions, thereby eliminating the tiresome business of working with additional windows. An image splitter which can be moved around at will can be used to monitor the effect of the correction in each image area under WYSIWYG conditions. While this is happening, the next scan is taking place in the background - idle runs and waiting times are now a thing of the past. Each increase in computer power therefore has a direct impact on workflow performance. Newcolor 5000 will be available in November 2000. It requires a PC with Pentium III processor (minimum 400 MHz), 128 MB RAM, and runs under Windows 98 and NT 4. A minimum hard disk of 8 GB is recommended. The initial version of Newcolor 5000 will be bundled with Linoscan 1400, Linoscan 1450 with FireWire (Windows 98 SE only) and Linoscan 2200. The linkup to the Saphir Ultra 2 is possible by means of an update.
