Coloropen standardizes color communication in open workflows
Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG (Heidelberg) will be
presenting new versions of its Coloropen Tools Scanopen, Viewopen
and Printopen, all of which have been enhanced ready for drupa
2000. With a completely new user interface and far greater range of
functions, Heidelberg will be offering its proven Color Management
know-how as a communication link across the entire workflow, with
expertise ranging from data capture to printing press.
Businesses today use a whole range of applications from
different manufacturers - this is in the face of increased quality
requirements from users, ever smaller runs and shorter print times.
To ensure that color quality also remains consistent in open
workflows, Heidelberg's new versions of Scanopen, Viewopen and
Printopen are designed to provide vital support tools for the
entire workflow. The new versions of the three products have a
standardized, completely new user interface.
Frank Kupke, Product Manager for Color Management at
Heidelberg, believes that the improvements are particularly
apparent in the optimized computing algorithms: "The new tools
make our customers far more flexible. The ability to perform Media
Mapping means that the print data can be converted in line with the
particular printing process used. That means, for example, that a
newspaper printing profile can now be used to convert images in
true color for use in offset applications, even though the quality
and scope of the newspaper data is much less. The customer thus
needs far fewer correction runs than in the past, but need not
compromise color fidelity in any way."
The new version of Heidelberg Color Management is ideal for
print shops, repro houses and agencies, i.e. users from the entire
print media arts industry where professional color fidelity is
paramount. In the final analysis, however, all users of scanners,
monitors or output devices such as proofers or presses will also
benefit from these new products, since constant and reliable color
management is only possible by applying communication standards
between the various devices integrated into the workflow.
New Tools for Heidelberg Color Management
The Coloropen Tools consist of three different parts.
Scanopen can be used to create a profile for any scanner in a
matter of minutes and thereby generates the basis for true-color
work. Improved algorithms and import of 16-bit calibration scanning
data ensure high detail in shadows and extreme precision in
difficult gray and white tones. Less experienced users can make use
of a helpful assistant which performs simple tasks automatically
and with ease, while "expert" mode also guarantees fast
and reliable results for Color Management specialists.
Viewopen's key features include measuring unit supported
calibration and monitor profiling. The user can choose between two
profile sizes - a smaller matrix-based profile for use in e.g.
Photoshop and a complex profile based on three-dimensional look-up
tables. The Viewmaker from Heidelberg is a measuring head which can
be connected to the workstation via USB, ADB or a serial interface.
Other measuring units such as the Sequel Chroma 4, Gretag
Spectrolino and X-Rite DTP-92 are also supported.
The new version of Printopen optimizes integration of proof
profiles. This means that it is now possible, for example, to check
the black synthesis in print as early as the proofing stage, thus
enhancing both the contrast and the detail in the shadows. Media
Mapping supports variable use of print profiles. In addition to the
graphic display of color spaces - a means which shows the user the
different color space sizes in his workflow - Printopen also
calculates Delta E values. It is now possible, for example, to show
the difference between a special color in the Lab color space and
output via a print process.
All three products are integrated directly into the new
Newcolor 7000 scanning and repro software which will also be on
display at DRUPA. Adaptations have also been integrated for the
latest Version 6.0 of Heidelberg's Linocolor scanning and repro
software.
Scanopen, Viewopen and Printopen will be available in the new
version for Windows PCs in summer 2000. The Macintosh version will
be available at the same time and with the same functionality,
though the new user interface will not be implemented until Mac OS
X becomes available.
