No Limits to Digital Workflow: Online Print Production from Heidelberg, Wam!Net

02/24/2000

Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG (Heidelberg) will be working closely with WAM!NET and Hermstedt at CeBIT to produce issues of DI News (DI = Direct Imaging) which will be updated several times each day for visitors to the exhibition

An up-to-the-minute exhibition photo will also be incorporated using the Colorcam digital camera which is being unveiled at the fair. The photograph will be placed in a page layout and then output in four colors on the Quickmaster DI 46-4 digital offset press.

The world market leader for the print and publishing industry will thus be demonstrating a solution for the digital workflow which will link several locations across the exhibition grounds. Visitors will also be able to see the first applications from the cooperation agreement concluded between Heidelberg and WAM!NET at the end of last year. The companies are looking to cooperate in the field of digital data communication and to develop customized solutions for users in the graphic arts industry.

End-to-end digital workflows are used to optimize coordination of production sequences in the prepress. The customer gains in cash terms, thanks to rapid throughput times and the ability to respond flexibly to last-minute changes. It allows companies involved in the production process to work together smoothly, even when they are located in different countries.

The digital workflow overcomes both time and space
The solution is based on an image capture workstation which will be exhibited at the Heidelberg stand in Hall 8. The new Colorcam digital camera will capture photographs in top quality and then transmit these online to the Hermstedt stand in Hall 15. After the image data has been assembled into the layout of the DI News, the data is transmitted to the Quickmaster DI 46-4 located at the Heidelberg stand in Hall 1.

The Quickmaster DI 46-4 is controlled via a Delta DI RIP, images the printing plates directly in the press and then outputs the results at up to 10,000 A3 sheets per hour. It is ideal for the short run color market and for print on demand jobs for runs above 200 sheets.

The digital data is transmitted quickly and smoothly between the various halls by means of the high-speed private network operated by the international digital data courier WAM!NET and can be monitored from start to finish. ISDN cards from Hermstedt allow access to the WAM!NET network from all participating terminals via a total of 8 ISDN channels.
