New dynamic sheet brake in the delivery ensures stable and
re-liable production of thinner papers and speeds of up to
18,000 sheets per hour

New air delivery system with more than twice as many fans as
before ensures neat pile delivery

Dynamic sheet distance control now also available for
shorter perfecting presses
At GraphExpo, taking place in Chicago from October 15-18, 2006,
Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG (Heidelberg) is to launch a
Speedmaster CD 74 with an improved delivery that ensures even
higher productivity. The highlight is a completely new drive
concept for a dynamic sheet brake in the delivery. On perfecting
presses, the innovation enables faster and more reliable production
speeds for perfecting jobs, particularly when it comes to using
thinner papers and print jobs where only two brake modules can be
used due to the printed image. On straight-printing presses, it
results in more stable production at speeds of more than 15,000
sheets per hour with papers weighing less than 135 grams per square
meter. These effects are supported by the new air delivery system
that ensures more exact and therefore improved pile quality in the
delivery. The new system utilizes 18 fans instead of the previous
eight. A honeycomb grid is located below these fans which makes the
air flow more evenly onto the sheets.
The dynamic sheet distance control which has so far only been
available on long perfecting presses is now also available for
shorter perfectors. This provides for mark-free sheet travel to the
delivery. An ultrasonic sensor after the final printing unit
measures the distance between the sheet and the guiding devices. It
uses predefined characteristic curves to control the air which
ensures that no contact occurs. This process is fully automatic for
the various paper grammages and cuts make-ready times.
A number of key components have been added to the Smart Sheet
Travel concept to ensure reliable and mark-free sheet travel. As of
October 2006, the new dynamic sheet brake will come as standard on
the Speedmaster CD 74 in combination with the optional speed of
18,000 sheets per hour and can be ordered as an option for
perfecting presses and straight-printing presses with speeds of
15,000 sheets per hour. The new air system in the delivery will be
standard on all Speedmaster CD 74 presses as of October 2006. In
addition, the standard package for all long perfectors with eight
or more printing units will include the dynamic sheet distance
control and it will also be optionally available for shorter
perfecting presses from October 2006.
"We process a wide range of jobs and print runs from 100
to 300,000 sheets, so we opted for a Speedmaster CD 74 five-color
press with the speed of 18,000 sheets per hour. The new suction
head in the feeder and the new dynamic sheet brake in the delivery
enabled us to boost our average print speed by between 2,000 and
3,000 sheets per hour, particularly with thinner papers," says
Axel Zimmer of Zimmer Print + Medien. "The stable speed of
18,000 sheets per hour is crucial for cost-effective pro-duction,
particularly when it comes to long print runs," adds Zimmer.
The print shop, located near Paderborn, Germany, has nine
employees. Cologne-based print shop Häuser, a full-service
commercial print shop with a staff of 38, reports similar increases
in productivity. "We were one of the first print shops to test
the new dynamic sheet brake in a Speedmaster CD 74 eight-color
perfector. We have increased our production speed for critical
paper grades by up to 2,000 sheets per hour," reports Heiko
Mazur, owner and CEO of Häuser. His business model is based
increasingly on an Internet sales platform that demands high
quality and the fastest possible delivery times for print jobs.
The art of clean sheet transport
The key to the new drive concept is a dynamic and therefore
exactly-defined braking process. Rather than the sheet brake having
a consistent speed, as was the case previously, the dynamic brake
supports changes of speed while one sheet passes. The sheet is
transferred to the brakes almost completely without any speed
differen-tial, slowed down to an adjustable speed and then
deposited in the delivery. A no-play drive train with up to six
sheet brakes ensures a mechanically stable and rigid system. The
brake modules can be adjusted vertically and laterally, meaning a
wide range of printing stocks can be processed and effective sheet
tensioning achieved. Depending on the print product, the sheet
brakes can be inserted and removed in just a few steps.
All Speedmaster CD 74 models are to incorporate the drive
concept with new brake, but without dynamic features, as standard
from the start of 2007 onward. The braking speed is then set to a
fixed value.
Speedmaster CD 74 - a real all-rounder
The Speedmaster CD 74 was introduced at drupa 2000. Since
drupa 2004, the press has also been available with a perfecting
device and, since summer 2005, as a long perfecting press with up
to 12 printing units. It is the high productivity, flexibility and
large scope of application offered by the Speedmaster CD 74 that
customers rate so highly. A ten-color press with a coating unit
before and after sheet reversal was presented at Ipex 2006. It
enables customers to boost productivity by 30 percent, as the
printed sheet reaches the finishing stage much faster. At Ipex 06,
the Speedmaster CD 74 also showed that it runs at a maximum
speed of 18,000 sheets per hour.
