Universal medium-format press is a favorite on the market
The American print shop Phil Vedda & Sons Printing
Company of Lakewood, Ohio, has taken delivery of the Speedmaster CD
74 with the 5,000th printing unit. During the Print 05 trade show
in Chicago, Bernhard Schreier, Chairman of the Management Board of
Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG (Heidelberg), presented a
certificate to Vedda & Sons. The press - a Speedmaster CD 74
five-color with coating unit - will be installed in the fall. Vedda
& Sons intends to use this to extend its service offering. The
print shop, founded in 1956, employs 13 staff and offers
high-quality printed matter for regional and multiregional
customers. The product range extends from business cards to
brochures. Heidelberg machines are also deployed in the prepress
and postpress stages. "We're impressed by Heidelberg's
equipment and level of service," confirm Joe and Jim Vedda,
adding that this was a reason for purchasing the new press.
The Speedmaster CD 74 is emerging as a bestseller that is
constantly evolving and is admired all over the world by label and
packaging printers just as much as by commercial print shops.
Showcased for the first time at drupa 2000, the press went into
series production at the start of 2001. This was followed in 2002
by the CD 74 with dual coating unit. As an integrated UV model it
was the first press to receive the "Optimized UV
Printing" certificate. The optional perfecting device was
exhibited at drupa 2004. This was followed in the same year by the
Speedmaster CD 74 Duo and, consequently, the combination of offset
and flexographic. The Speedmaster CD 74 is now available as a
straight printing press and as a perfecting press with up to ten
printing units that generates a maximum speed of 15,000 sheets per
hour. Its modular design means it can be flexibly combined with
coating and drying units and adapted to individual customer
requirements. Recently, Heidelberg delivered the longest
Speedmaster CD 74, measuring 21 meters (69 feet), to a customer in
France. Customers appreciate the fast setup, simple, automated
operation, high quality, and reliability during the production run,
even with frequently changing printing stocks of varying grammages.
The press can process a whole range of products, from 0.03
millimeter (0.0012 inch) paper up to 0.8 millimeter (0.031 inch)
thick card. The UV model even prints films and plastic cards. The
Speedmaster CD 74 series covers the 53 x 74 centimeters (20.86 x
29.13 inches) format and the somewhat larger 60.5 x 74 centimeters
(23.82 x 29.13 inches) format that allows for more copies per sheet
when printing labels and packagings, for instance.
The Speedmaster CD 74 won a very special prize in 2002 - the
Design Award of the Federal Republic of Germany. This rewarded its
sophisticated product design and, in particular, its user
friendliness.
