Speedmaster CD 74 now with perfecting system
Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG (Heidelberg) will be
presenting the Speedmaster CD 74 with optional perfecting system at
drupa 2004. This press enables high-quality printing on both sides
of the sheet with short changeover times between paper and board
and from the straight printing mode to the perfecting mode.
Depending on the job mix, an increase in productivity of between 15
and 25 percent over the traditional perfecting presses on the
midsize market can be achieved. The target groups for the
Speedmaster CD 74 perfecting models are commercial printers
handling a wide range of printing stocks, packaging and label
printers, and print shops that mainly produce greetings cards or
book jackets in perfecting mode. Presses fitted with perfecting
technology can make a significant contribution to increasing
productivity, particularly in the packaging sector and especially
as more and more applications are being printed on the reverse side
in this sector, for instance boxes for cosmetics or blister cards.
The three-drum system newly developed for the Speedmaster CD
74 enables even printing stocks up to a maximum thickness of 0.8
millimeter to be processed reliably in perfecting mode. In many
cases, with a maximum paper format of 60.5 x 74 centimeters, users
can achieve extra productivity when printing multiple-ups or jobs
involving special formats . The maximum print speed both in
straight and perfecting mode is 15,000 sheets per hour. The
Speedmaster CD 74 with a convertible sheet reversing device will be
available in four to six-color models, with or without a coating
system, and extended delivery. All models are highly versatile
all-round presses and support fast setup, simple automated
operation and reliability during the production run, even with
frequently changing printing stocks of all kind of substrates.
"Medium-sized print shops often only have one press - in
the 50 x 70 format range - and therefore demand maximum
flexibility, no matter whether for straight or perfecting
printing," explains Dr. Klaus Spiegel, member of the
Heidelberg Management Board. "The CD 74 with perfecting system
now enables us to meet the many different requirements our
customers have. This press is a real all-rounder that processes
high-quality print products with increasingly diverse printing
stocks. Not only that, it can also process board with ease,"
adds Dr. Spiegel. The new Speedmaster CD 74 perfecting presses will
be available in the 53 x 74 centimeters and 60.5 x 74 centimeters
format ranges as of summer 2004.
Versatile perfecting press
The tried-and-tested three-drum principle has been
complemented on the Speedmaster CD 74 with sheet-reversing device
by a raft of new innovations. An ingenious double-sized transfer
cylinder has been fitted directly in front of the storage drum.
This takes the sheet from the impression cylinder of the printing
unit located before the sheet reversing device and guides it
towards a double-sized storage drum. The storage drum has all the
features of the tried-and-tested Heidelberg sheet reversing device,
such as the rotary sucker system which aligns the sheet perfectly.
An eccentrically shaped single-sized reversing drum with a pincer
gripper bar then guides the sheet in the gripper closure to the
following printing unit. The result is a high level of register
accuracy, as customers have come to expect on Speedmaster presses
with sheet reversing device. The only difference is that this
register accuracy is now available for a greatly increased range of
printing substrates. The exceptional sheet travel associated with
the Speedmaster CD 74 straight-printing models will not be
adversely affected by the new perfecting system.
In straight printing mode, the Speedmaster CD 74 perfecting
press behaves like its sister model without perfecting system and
with the AirTransfer system fitted as standard between the printing
units. Heidelberg introduced the new Speedmaster CD 74 with
double-sized impression cylinders and AirTransfer system between
the printing units at the end of 2000 for printing rigid materials
up to 0.8 millimeter thick. The variable AirTransfer system was
developed specifically for perfecting printing and it is in this
mode that it shows its full flexibility - segments are operated
fully automatically and support sheet travel between printing
units. What's more, the new generation of high-finish
impression cylinder jackets PerfectJacket Plus ensures that the
best possible perfecting quality is achieved.
Profitable printing on both sides of the sheet
In comparison with traditional perfecting presses with up to
six colors, the increase in productivity on the new Speedmaster CD
74 with a sheet reversing device is directly related to the job
mix. The more often heavier printing stocks over 250 gram per
square meter are utilized, the more the improvements in
productivity become evident. The main reason for this is that these
printing substrates, which were previously considered difficult,
can now be produced with short setup times (thanks to numerous
automated processes), reduced cleaning times and an effortless
production run.
The Speedmaster CD 74 allows a pile height of 1.20 meter in
the feeder, which greatly reduces the number of interruptions
caused by pile changes, especially for thick substrates like
carton. All in all, this enables increases in productivity of
between 15 and 25 percent.
Printing on both sides of the sheet plays an incredibly
important role at Heidelberg, especially in the 50 x 70 format
range. The success of the Speedmaster SM 74 with more than 28,000
printing units delivered since 1994 would have never been
conceivable without the flexible perfecting device. The perfecting
presses in the Speedmaster SM 74 series are a highly effective
production tool for materials with maximum grammages of approx.
250-300 gram per square meter and come with up to 10 printing units
for 5/5 printing in a single pass.
As before, the successful Speedmaster SM 74 eight and
ten-color models are still available as "long perfecting
presses". With the newly developed feeder and optimizations in
sheet travel, they are the most productive solution when it comes
to printing brochures or annual reports on the usual grammages of
up to 250 gram per square meter.

The Speedmaster CD 74 is now also available with a
perfecting system and offers impressive versatility - it can print
both paper and board up to 0.8 millimeter thickness in a single
pass on both sides.
