Medium-Format Presses for High-End Applications
The introduction of the new Printmaster PM 74 and Speedmaster
CD 74 product lines and the new Speedmaster SM 74-10-P Speedmaster
significantly extended the product portfolio of Heidelberger
Druckmaschinen AG (Heidelberg) in the 50x70 sector following drupa
2000. Heidelberg developed the Speedmaster CD 74 series and the
Speedmaster SM 74 ten-color press with sheet-reversal unit
specifically for high-end applications and increased productivity.
Speedmaster CD 74 - the ideal solution for medium-format
packaging printing
The Speedmaster CD 74 is a straight-printing press which has
been developed from the bottom up and comprises four, five or six
printing units and an optional coating system. These models have
double-width impression cylinders and air transfer to ensure the
reliable transport of a wide range of printing stock. High-speed
inking units, Alcolor Vario dampening systems and the CP2000 Center
are further key features of this series.
The field trial phase conducted in close cooperation with
selected customers has now been concluded. The press went into
series production in December 2000. "By the end of April 2001 we
will have supplied more than 180 printing units", reports Dr.
Jürgen Rautert, Head of Heidelberg's Sheetfed Business Unit.
The new press has already won many new friends, as Thomas Frank,
Manager of 50 x 70 Product Management explains: "The field trial
customers found no difficulty at all in integrating the CD 74 into
their multi-shift production, where it proved to be highly reliable
and was used for handling high-quality jobs for discriminating
customers."
Heidelberg developed the Speedmaster CD 74 in part for
packaging print shops who find themselves printing ever smaller
runs of cosmetic and pharmaceutical packagings and/or labels, for
example. Special businesses can also use the press to produce
plastic cards and tags. However, the machine is also ideal for
general commercial and mixed businesses that often swap between
paper and card and between different formats. The CD 74 offers
these target groups a high level of automation, which in turn is
reflected in minimum makeready times and ease of use both during
setup and production. "Time and waste are key cost factors that the
CD 74 can help reduce", explains Thomas Frank. Since the press is
controlled via the CP 2000 Center, it can also be fully integrated
into the workflow. The fact that functionality and aesthetics are
not necessarily mutually exclusive in mechanical engineering is
amply demonstrated by the Speedmaster CD 74. In January 2001 it
received the "Top Ten Award" from the Industrie Forum Design
Hannover. From 1,320 new products, the panel of judges chose the CD
74 as one of the ten best designs.
Heidelberg produces the Speedmaster CD 74 in two formats -
the F format and C format - in order to meet the needs of these
different target groups. The Speedmaster CD 74-F has been designed
for packaging and label printers. Its maximum paper format of 60x74
centimeter can be used to produce a larger number of repeats per
sheet. The Speedmaster CD 74-C has a sheet size of 53x74 centimeter
and is therefore ideal for general commercial and mixed printers
who already have a Speedmaster SM 74. The printing plates can be
exchanged between the two presses which therefore complement each
other and give the printshop an added degree of flexibility. The C
format will be available from 4Q 2001.
Speedmaster SM 74-10-P - top quality for perfecting printing
Since the Speedmaster SM 74 was first launched back in
1994, Heidelberg has continued developing it to meet customers'
changing needs. The medium-format product line, for example, covers
a broad range of products and is extremely flexible in terms of
both equipment and applications, being available as anything from a
one-color to a ten-color press, with optional coating unit, and
either with or without sheet reversal. The latest model, the
Speedmaster SM 74-10-P ten-color press with sheet reversal follows
on from the One-Pass Productivity concept which began with the
eight-color Speedmaster SM 74-8-P in 1997. Heidelberg is targeting
this press at industrial, state-of-the-art general commercial
printers looking to produce cost-effective medium-format products
using proven technology. "We installed the first SM 74-10-P units
after drupa 2000", explains Thomas Frank. "Everything went
smoothly. Our customers made maximum use of the considerable time
and cost savings made possible by 5/5 color printing in a single
pass." Heidelberg has now supplied five medium-format ten-color
presses and more have been ordered. "We expect demand to be as
positive as it has been for the eight-color 4/4 model. We have
installed almost 100 of these machines worldwide", adds the product
manager.
The Speedmaster SM 74-10-P can also be fully integrated into
the multi-stage production process via the CP 2000 Center and is
easy to operate. A high level of automation and the short makeready
times that go hand-in-hand with this ensure ease of use and
cost-effectiveness. The ten-color press has a fully automatic
adjustable sheet-reversal unit for producing 5/5 or 4/4 with
double-sided coating. Sheet guide plates with Venturi nozzles in
the high-pile delivery guide the printing stock perfectly to the
delivery pile. Thanks to the new PerfectJackets - exchangeable
jackets for the impression cylinders - both sides are printed in
the same high quality. This means that the finished sheet is
produced cost-effectively in only a single pass and also
significantly reduces waste. Perfect interplay between these
technologies, combined with One-Pass Productivity, ensures that the
printer receives high-end printing quality on both sides with the
SM 74-10-P.
Satisfied customers
The Drukkerij Haletra in Houthalen-Helchteren/Belgium
field-tested the Speedmaster CD 74 and right from the outset
integrated it fully into its production workflow. Both Haletra and
a further CD 74 customer, the Budelse Drukerij printshop in
Budel/Netherlands, use the press for both general commercial
printing and packaging printing. Over the last year, for example,
Haletra has used the CD 74 to print around 1,100 jobs on a vast
range of different printing stocks, including high-quality labels
and luxury packagings. The flexibility of the CD 74 has brought
both print shops increased cost-effectiveness and productivity.
The W.D. Neu general commercial printers in
Maintal-Dörnigheim/Germany put its first Speedmaster SM
74-10-P into service in August 2000. Neu had already installed an
eight-color Speedmaster SM 74-8-P in May 1997 which the ten-color
model replaced. For the most part, the press is used for perfecting
printing (4/4 with spot colors or coating and 5/5), though a
considerable proportion of its work has been straight printing only
(six colors and more or coating). A further Speedmaster SM 74-10-P
user, the Colourstream printshop in Derby/UK, essentially uses the
press to increase its productivity and dramatically reduce job
throughput times. Each job is effectively checked to see whether
perfecting is possible in order to ensure that as many jobs as
possible can be produced in a single pass. Here, too, the vast
majority of all jobs lend themselves to this method of production.
New developments planned for medium-format Printshops are
requiring more and more specialized machine configurations in order
to maximize flexibility and competitive advantage. Heidelberg is
committed to meeting these market needs quickly and innovatively
and is therefore committed to continuous product development.
The company is also planning a number of innovations in the
high-end sector. A Speedmaster CD 74 with eight printing units,
coating system and extended delivery for use in label printing is
already ready to go at the Wiesloch plant. It will be ready for
delivery in 4Q 2001. New models designed specifically for packaging
printing are under development.
The Speedmaster SM 74 is a typical perfecting press and also
offers high flexibility. The North American market in particular is
very receptive to eight-color presses with sheet-reversal unit and
coating system located after the eighth printing unit. These
configurations can be used for both perfecting printing or straight
printing only.
Printmaster PM 74 - the gateway to the medium-format
The Printmaster PM 74 rounds off the bottom-end of the
medium-format product range. Its low investment costs make it ideal
for entry-level users or where additional capacity is required in
the medium format. It is based on a combination of proven
Heidelberg standards and innovative details which greatly simplify
manual operation of the unit. The cost-effective Printmaster PM 74
series will be augmented by a four-color model with optional sheet
reversal unit in the fall of 2001.
