Change is afoot in the market for packaging. Packaging designs are
being modified more and more frequently to accommodate changing
requirements. Stocks are being run down and order sizes are
shrinking. For the packaging printer, this means shrinking print
runs and growing customer expectations in terms of print and
finishing quality. So being able to deliver the required print
quality quickly and reliably is becoming a decisive success factor.
Heidelberg's answer to this trend is the Speedmaster CD 74. Its
innovative concept is perfectly set up for fast job changes and
reducing waste. This new press for the mid-size format will be
making its debut at drupa 2000.
The Speedmaster CD 74 has been developed specially for
packaging printing and is based on tried-and-tested Speedmaster
standards. Its high degree of automation with preset in the feeder
and delivery and simple operation with the CP2000 Center greatly
accelerate setup procedures. Since the cost-effectiveness of
Short-Run Packaging operations is determined by makeready times,
the Speedmaster CD 74 is the ideal press for this market segment.
For longer runs, print quality is not only achieved quickly, it is
also easy to maintain. This means that the maximum production run
speed of 15,000 sheets/hour can be achieved constantly in practice.
In comparison with 50x70 presses, the 600 x 740 millimeters format
can offer the folding box printer an additional row of image copies
on the sheet. The double-diameter impression cylinders and
AirTransfer between the printing units permit smooth sheet travel
for high-quality printing of thick materials.
Since printing materials are a considerable cost factor in
packaging printing, the inking and dampening units on the press
have been designed to consistently reduce waste. And, since
it's also very important to produce a good sheet as quickly as
possible, new CP2000 functions such as Color Fast Solution support
the operator.
With the CP2000 Center central press control system with
touchscreen and user-friendly menu prompting, the Speedmaster CD 74
forms an ideal core for the digital workflow. CP2000 software
modules such as PresetLink and MemoryPlus enable the functions to
be expanded as the requirements of the printshop dictate. All the
operating elements are clearly and ergonomically arranged and are
the same as those on other Speedmaster presses. The printer has
control of the whole press from the CP2000 Center, and can
considerably reduce makeready times thanks to new functions like
Color Fast Solution.
Clever solutions for the packaging printer
The Speedmaster CD 74 makes life as easy as possible for
the printer, even with frequent job changes in Short-Run Packaging.
When it comes to changing the washing cloth, the automatic washup
devices for the impression and blanket cylinders simply move out on
rails. The Alcolor Vario dampening unit prevents hickeys during the
production run. In the delivery, sheet travel can be observed from
the side, and the setting elements and dryer modules are located on
the operating side. Complete preset in the feeder and delivery
ensure speedy format and material changes.
The optional coating system on the Speedmaster CD 74 comes
with chamber doctor blade and extended delivery as standard.
Alternating operation with a two-roller system is possible.
Series delivery of the new Speedmaster CD 74 is planned for
the spring of 2001. Press configurations from four to six colors
with or without coating system will be available. Target groups are
packaging print shops wishing to expand their fleet of 70x100
presses with a particularly cost-effective press for short print
runs, and industrial print shops wishing to make a professional
entry to the attractive market segment of Short-Run Packaging.
