Eastern enlargement - focus on Europe
The European Union is set to grow by a further ten countries in 2004. The 25 member states will then have a population of 451 million people. With a GDP of Euro 9,200 billion, the European single market will almost have caught up with the world's largest economy, the USA. Does this mean a brand new "old world"?
The most recent issue of the Heidelberg magazine print process examines EU enlargement to the east, with special focus on the print media industry. The authors traveled to the Czech Republic to investigate the influence of western publishing companies on the Czech press. The magazine also visits the three high-tech Polish printshops Cezar, Perfekt and Winkowski, which all display a great deal of self-confidence and a sense of mission. Finally, the print process correspondents illustrate the mixed feelings accompanying eastern enlargement, using an example of media makers in Malta.
The new issue also looks at the politico-economic pros and cons of eastern enlargement and draws attention to the impending cultural differences. One author even succeeded in infiltrating the École de Guerre Économique and smuggled out information about Europe's only school for economic war.
And last but not least, the magazine brings a little light into the shadowy world of the translator before taking a look at the largest secondhand bookshop in the world.
