The struggle for survival
Daily newspapers are getting thinner, advertising volumes are shrinking and some newspapers are on the brink of collapse. The relentless struggle for survival on the magazine and newspaper market has prompted the latest edition of Heidelberg’s magazine print process to seek out newspaper concepts that are able to withstand the crisis.
The print process authors found the “Vorarlberger Nachrichten”, an Austrian newspaper that has managed to create unbelievable added value for its database of subscribed readers. The multi-media company even helps its readers cut their electricity bills! The authors then examine effective crisis management of a mainly editorial nature at the “Wall Street Journal Europe” and the famous “New York Times”. The magazine also takes a look at China, where the veritable forest of newspapers and magazines is growing like nowhere else on earth, and introduces its readers to the “Morgunbladid”, a newspaper that feeds its readers a daily diet of reports on ‘fish’.
print process also asked media scientist Norbert Bolz about the future of print media, and hosted its own expert discussions at the Heidelberg Print Media Academy to examine the significance of the future lending regulations (“Basle II”) for print and media companies.
And last but not least, the magazine will of course be entering into the pre-Christmas spirit, with reports on the latest fashions in chocolate Santas and a profile of someone who collects shopping bags.
