From Reel to High Value Added Cartonboard Packaging in a Single Pass: the Gallus KM 410/510 Inline System

04/01/2004
Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG: Gallus KM 410/510
Details
The Gallus KM 410/510 narrow web inline system opens up an entirely new dimension in high quality value added folding carton converting.

The Gallus KM 410/510 inline system is modular in design and construction, so that one can print, process and finish complex carton board packaging jobs in a single pass. The advantages are obvious: improved workflow, simpler materials handling, time savings and increased efficiency. For the Gallus Group, the forthcoming drupa exhibition will provide an international showcase for Gallus' folding carton converting solution. At drupa, the Gallus KM 410/510 will be demonstrated at the Heidelberg exhibition area.

As demarcation lines between different types of packaging production open up, Gallus is adapting the expertise gained as a global leader in narrow web inline press manufacture into the field of inline carton production.
Speaking for the Gallus Group, Vice President Sales & Marketing, Klaus Aarestrup commented: "Our approach to the carton market is strategic, targeting specific areas of folding carton products and blister packs which require high added value elements such as reverse-side printing, effect printing with screen inks, hot foil stamping and hologram insetting, various types of laminations, and of course economical creasing, die cutting and embossing".

Aimed at complementing the existing packaging segment ,this new concept of narrow web inline production is particularly suited to the healthcare and beautycare industries, as well as certain food and other non-food products. Klaus Aarestrup continues, "The Gallus KM solution is clearly complimentary to Heidelberg’s sheet-based packaging solutions. Sheetfed offset is today the prime technology for folding carton printing and at Gallus we do not see this changing any time soon. What we do see is an additional approach for Folding Carton printers to optimise their production capabilities to produce more economically cartons with several inline processes."

The Gallus KM line offers a high degree of production flexibility while being remarkably easy to operate. With waterbased or UV flexo and reverse side printing capability, coupled inline with hot foil stamping/hologram insetting and laminating, and either rotary or flat-bed window punching, creasing, die cutting and embossing, the Gallus KM 410/510 offers up to 16 combinable units, all based on the modular platform construction concept. Today, the Gallus KM 410 is combined with the Gallus FSM 410 flat-bed folding carton die-cutter, while the "wider" brother Gallus KM 510 is available with rotary die cutting. A Gallus FSM 510 flat-bed die cutter is being developed and will be available as of 2005.

At drupa: Gallus is demonstrating a job change from a healthcare to a beautycare application including substrate, ink and processes. The configuration of the press will be eight platform units, six flexo printing units for UV or waterbased flexo printing and varnishing, one screen printing unit, one hot foil stamping with foil saving and hologram insetting device, one laminating unit on rail system, dual rotary processing unit and the unique Gallus FSM 410 flat-bed die cutter.

Consisting of an infeed section with web storage area, optional waste removal station for window stripping, shredder and moveable operator panel, the Gallus FSM 410 uses the flat bed die-cutting method for fast make ready with less expensive tooling, so essential for short run competitivity. With optional unwind unit, the Gallus FSM 410 is capable of working offline, too.

A number of successful installations have already been finalized in Europe and USA. One of our customers, Mr Reto Schmidheiny, Process Manager at Model PrimePac (Switzerland), has very recently stated in an interview that "there are not very many companies offering an inline system like this. It is a modular machine, which means that complex carton board packaging can be printed, finished and processed - all in a single pass. The main benefit of this system is that it is economical and the quality of the end product is excellent."
