The Quickmaster DI from Heidelberg - adds to customers'
successes.
Average gross profit of 45 percent
The latest study by CAP Ventures confirms the results of
a previous study in 1999 - customers who use the Quickmaster 46-4
DI offset press from Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG (Heidelberg)
are considerably more successful than the industry average. The
surveyed Quickmaster DI customers in the USA reported an average
gross profit of 45 percent. This puts them 15 percent up on
the profit leaders in the industry and no less than 19
percent ahead of the industry average. These figures were
calculated by the American PIA (Printing Industries of America).
Although the economic climate today represents a far greater
challenge than it did three years ago, the yield advantage of the
Quickmaster DI has risen a further 3.6 percent since 1999,
while the industry average has stagnated over this same period. As
the results of the survey also show, the Quickmaster DI produces
profit even with short color runs. The CAP Ventures study
discovered that "the Quickmaster DI prints profitably from a job
run of 450 - 600 sheets for a 4/4 job and from 350 - 500
sheets for a 4/0 job". The QM DI is therefore ideal for the growing
short run color market. "The CAP Ventures study is an important
industry barometer and we're absolutely delighted with our
customers' success", explains Dr. Klaus Spiegel, Member of the
Management Board at Heidelberg responsible for sheetfed offset.
"The Quickmaster DI has once again proven its worth as a
top-quality press that companies can rely on to meet their
customers' wishes and at the same time achieve profits that are
well above average".
Customer profiles
The study, which surveyed some 480 Quickmaster DI customers,
reinforces the unflagging popularity of the DI press. This is due
mainly to its amazing flexibility and, as the study shows, to the
fact that it can be used to earn good money. Small and medium-sized
businesses especially, who achieve sales of up to USD 5 million
(€ 5.7 million), can profit from the advantages of the
Quickmaster DI. This size of business also coincides with the
average number of employees in a "typical" DI printshop. 70
percent of all DI shops employ fewer than 20 staff, and 76
percent of these use one-and-a-half shifts or less.
Good reasons for the DI
When asked why they chose the Quickmaster DI, customers
reeled off a whole list of success factors. Alongside the
outstanding print quality, the other crucial factor was the
excellent cost-per-sheet ratio. But customers were also delighted
with the DI press's seamless digital workflow - including the
RIP, in-press imaging and automatic ink adjustment - which
supports extremely fast job changes in less than ten minutes. The
opinion of Billet Graphics, Inc. sums it up: "With the DI, we can
print jobs literally at the last minute. And our customers are
pretty impressed by our fast turnaround, excellent quality and
unbeatable price". At Printing for Less.com, everyone is agreed:
"With our 12 jobs per shift, we write a new success story every
single day". A further key success factor is the wide range of
printing stock that the QM DI can handle - a feature which is
particularly important for companies that only use a Quickmaster
DI. With this performance spectrum, the QM DI is tremendously
versatile, enabling it to win orders in the face of fierce
competition. "The survey confirms that Heidelberg was spot on in
its assessment of the market right from the start", says Gotthard
Schmid, Head of the Direct Imaging Product Center. "With the
Quickmaster DI, our customers have the best equipment available for
an environment in which ever-shorter job throughput times are
becoming the norm".
The Quickmaster DI is not only a highly-profitable press, but
is also an end-to-end system that offers its users a whole raft of
new areas of application and opportunities. "
Digitization is all the rage
Back in 1999, the Internet was mentioned as a planned project
by the majority of DI customers. By 2001, most of the survey
respondents had integrated the Internet into their corporate
structure and workflows as an important medium for communicating
with their customers. 40 percent of the DI printers maintain a
website, while 37 percent use the Internet for transferring
digital print data quickly. This also shows that the Internet is
playing an increasingly important role in DI customers' digital
production workflows. As the figures confirm, customers are already
profiting from the benefits of fast digital data flows.
About the study
The latest study was once again carried out by the renowned
CAP Ventures Inc. market research institute, based in
Massachusetts. The aim was to investigate the typical size and main
characteristics of DI customers, and determine the gross profit
achieved using various typical short-run color print jobs. To
calculate the percentage profit values, the survey respondents drew
up an offer for two typical short-run jobs.
