The 1,500th Heidelberg Quickmaster Direct Imaging press has been
sold to Parallel Print Services on the island of Guernsey, a new
digital start up company focussing on print-on-demand and digital
asset management.
Managing Director Neil Le Vallee and Production Manager
Ian Bushby started the company last November. Mr Le Vallee says:
"Our initial focus is to provide print-on-demand which is why we
have chosen the QM DI 46-4. It is the ideal solution for flexible
production of short run colour work with the ability to make last
minute changes."
Parallel is targeting customers with low to medium volume
print runs which require a quick and accurate turnaround of work.
By working with Heidelberg the company has found the ideal press
which combines modern, efficient and flexible technology with quick
makeready and a high quality printed result.
With efficiency a key requirement of print-on-demand,
Heidelberg's development of computer-to-press technology allows
direct imaging of the plates on the press. From receipt of the file
from the RIP it can image four plates simultaneously and be
printing in a matter of minutes. This significantly speeds job
turnaround by eliminating a number of production steps and it also
keeps the consumption of materials down.
Parallel has also bought a conventional sheet-fed Printmaster
QM 46-2 two-colour press to handle traditional printing of low to
medium runs. Both the DI and the two-colour press are compact and
clean and only need one person to operate, useful for a start-up
company that wants to keep its overheads down.
Parallel is targeting customers in the retail and finance
sectors throughout Guernsey and the UK. Mr Le Vallee says: "We are
a forward looking company and are taking our ideas direct to the
customer, rather than waiting for them to come to us. Through this
approach we expect to become the biggest print-on-demand company in
the UK and Channel Islands within five years."
Heidelberg's UK Marketing Manager, Sascha Fischer, says:
"Since our introduction of DI technology over ten years ago we have
had great success with numerous installations operating all over
the world. Our current focus of development in DI technology is
towards optimising the process chain to address the growing trend
towards short colour runs. We are pleased to see a company such as
Parallel making good use of this technology and looking for new
ways to market. Nothing else can match the efficiency, print
quality and flexibility of Direct Imaging for serving this
particular market."
