Transparent Business Processes in Print-on-Demand Workflow

05/17/2000

Java-based Business Workflow database makes all business processes transparent on the Quickmaster DI 46-4 o Open interfaces to industry software o Software solution can be retrofitted and expanded

The drupa 2000 generation of the Quickmaster DI 46-4, Heidelberg's internationally successful digital 35 x 50 centimeter offset press with direct imaging, is ideal for horizontal integration into printshop business workflows. The new Java-based Business Workflow database makes business processes more transparent for printers.

The Business Workflow is a new front-end database system with open interfaces to various industry software systems. It is available as an additional option and can also be retrofitted to existing machines. The Business Workflow records all operating data of the DI system and evaluates this. Once the Quickmaster DI 46-4 has been fully integrated into the content workflow, this puts the final brick in place for digital integration of the business processes.

The high-performance "print-on-demand" market is also looking for new challenges in the face of quickly changing market requirements and price pressures. Users need to develop new strategic goals and be able to quickly restructure their sales organizations, internal production flows and management processes. In order to ensure lasting optimization of these business processes, business management and technical applications need to be able to communicate with each other.

Greater transparency for business success
The Business Workflow database records all machine and RIP processes and groups these together on a job basis for analysis. This provides users with an even better financial check about the total number of orders and order structure. What job profiles are best suited for maximizing profits on the Quickmaster DI 46-4 and which are less suited? - This is a question which users can now answer very accurately using the Business Workflow analyses.

All operating data and job definitions are recorded by the system. The Business Workflow provides an overview of the printed jobs, the jobs currently being printed and subsequent jobs in each network client. This also provides an overview of the current business status, assigns individual jobs to specific orders, structures jobs and improves organization.

Business Workflow tools
Various tools are used to expand the performance of the Business Workflow. ConfigTool can be used to preconfigure standard values such as units, hourly rates, paper prices, grammages, proofers etc. OrderTool assigns individual jobs to specific orders. QMTool analyzes, searches, queries and corrects data records, while status Tool provides details of the system's current status.

The Business Workflow is a Java-based database for any number of Java clients on Mac, PC or Unix systems. No browsers are required for display purposes. The SYLK standard format enables data to be exported to Office applications. The host interface provides an interface to DataControl, Printy32 and WinKAAR. An interface to the Job Definition Format (JDF) of the Heidelberg, Adobe, Agfa and Man Roland consortium is being implemented.
