Prosetter: Higher Productivity Thanks to Extended Automation - Heidelberg Adds Multi Cassette Loader to Violet Platesetter and Enhances Integration in the Printroom

04/01/2004

At drupa 2004, Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG (Heidelberg) will be adding a further option - the Multi Cassette Loader - to its Prosetter range of violet platesetters.

This new option means a Prosetter system can now image up to four different plate formats over several hours without changing cassettes. Thanks to the significantly reduced makeready times for format changes, this new loader module increases the productivity of the overall configuration. The Multi Cassette Loader can be retrofitted to existing systems on site in just a few hours. The integration of prepress into the printroom is also enhanced, thanks to a new, direct control link for plate production from the Prinect CP2000 Center.

"The Prosetter is already being used in production by several hundred customers. The new Multi Cassette Loader makes the Prosetter a highly productive multi-purpose machine," says Bent Mortensen, Senior Vice President, Product and Portfolio Management. "This flexible loading system is the perfect embodiment of Heidelberg's modular solution concept. With up to 4 formats that can be produced in parallel, the customer can now use the Prosetter for automatic and universal plate production for the entire printroom. The CtP link to the press via the CP2000 Center rounds off this outstanding solution concept. Only with Heidelberg will customers find this level of integration."

Modularity promotes growth
The entire Prosetter range is of modular design and geared to growth. Consequently, you can add a Single Cassette Loader or Multi Cassette Loader to the basic units at any time, thereby turning them into fully automatic systems. The manual Prosetter images up to 24 silver halide or photopolymer plates per hour. For fully automatic and more efficient production, the Single Cassette Loader (SCL) is docked onto the Prosetter. The Single Cassette Loader now performs the loading operation, then transports the imaged plate to the online processor for development via an integrated conveyor. To ensure greater flexibility with regard to formats or increased plate requirements, the system can now be augmented by the new Multi Cassette Loader. This consists of the SCL and a Multi Cassette Container holding up to four cassettes. Each cassette can be loaded with up to 150 plates. The Multi Cassette Loader therefore holds a total of up to 600 printing plates ready for fully automated plate production. A software-controlled elevator system in the Multi Cassette Container automatically loads the appropriate cassette for the required plate format into the SCL. Thanks to the extremely straightforward installation procedure, existing systems can also be retrofitted with this new system on site in a very short time, giving the customer more flexibility to handle increasingly demanding jobs. The Prosetter, together with the Single or Multi Cassette Loader, is a light-safe system and can therefore also be used in daylight conditions. The first Multi Cassette Loaders will be dispatched in the fall of this year.

Plate On Demand for the printroom
The new "Plate On Demand" function integrates the Prosetter even more directly into the printroom. To use this function, the operator of the Prinect CP2000 Center does not need any prior knowledge of the prepress processes. He simply selects the required job on his touchscreen. At the press of a button, he then starts plate imaging for the required color separation or the entire job directly via the CtP device. This direct control of the plate production is particularly useful during a night shift or for post-production of a printing plate. The prepress operator prepares the jobs as before, the press operator can then look at the job list and if necessary change the order of the jobs later on or select to go directly to the imaging stage by pressing a button on the CP2000 Center. This means the capacity utilization in the printroom determines plate production from the outset rather than vice versa. The "Plate On Demand" function will be available at the end of the year. Users must have Prinect MetaDimension Version 5.0 and enable the Preset Link option in the Prinect CP2000 Center Version 41 or Prinect Print Center.
