The fast filmsetter developed especially for small newspaper
publishers
Small newspaper publishers who do not want to invest in plate
recorders still need to use a fast 4-up filmsetter in their
production processes. These small companies also want to have the
facility to punch films on the narrow format side, preferably using
their own register system. Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG
(Heidelberg) has listened to these requirements and brought out a
special version of its well-known Herkules BASIC for newspapers.
Heidelberg will be presenting the Herkules BASIC Newspaper to the
trade for the first time at this year's IFRA exhibition in
Amsterdam.
Like the Herkules BASIC and the Herkules ELITE, the Newspaper
version also covers the 50 x 70 centimeters press format of
mid-format sheetfed presses (such as the Speedmaster 74). The
imaging format has even been enlarged, and now measures 562.5 x 750
millimeters when using an eight millimeter newspaper punch.
This maximum imageable area allows newspaper pages to be rotated
through 90° for imaging. This is necessary when the length of
the newspaper page exceeds the scan line length of 562.5
millimeters. As with the Herkules BASIC, the standard scan line
length is 558 millimeters. This can be increased to 562.5
millimeters by incorporating a customized punch on the long format
side (head punch, optional) at a distance of eight or ten
millimeters from register hole center to imaging start point. Side
punches can also be integrated on request (Stoesser, Bacher, Grapho
Metronic or customer-specific punches).
To enable newspaper publishers to optimize the speed of their
prepress operations, it is important to have lower resolutions. The
Herkules BASIC Newspaper therefore supports resolutions of 333,
500, 666, 800 and 1000 pixel/cm (845, 1270, 1693, 2032, 2540 dpi).
At a resolution of 1270 dpi, imaging speed is 64.4 cm/min (25.4
inches/min). This is made possible by the 32,000 rpm spinning speed
of the internal drum imagesetter.
Newspapers do not normally require resolutions of over 1000
pixel/cm (2540 dpi). However, many newspaper publishers have
expanded their portfolios and, in addition to the newspaper itself
(which is produced on a rotary press), now print magazines and
supplements (on a sheetfed offset press). The resolution level of
1333 pixel/cm (3387 dpi) offered by the Herkules BASIC Newspaper is
particularly useful and helpful to these customers.
Compared to the features of the Herkules BASIC, the Newspaper
version only has one limitation. Since nearly all newspaper
publishers use online processors in their production operations,
the Herkules BASIC Newspaper package does not contain the material
take-up cassette.

With an imaging format of 562.5 x 750 millimeters and a high
imaging speed of 64.4 cm/min (at a resolution of 1270 dpi), the
Herkules Newspaper is particularly well suited to the film
production operations of smaller newspaper publishers.
