Heidelberg's leading adhesive binder in operation at drupa
2000
Heidelberg is demonstrating advanced high-volume adhesive
binding technology at drupa 2000, with the latest model in its
Universal Binder series in full operation.
The new Universal Binder 2 has an industry leading 20,000
books per hour capacity. It can be configured for a wide range of
book sizes and can accommodate a maximum finished book thickness of
32 millimeters (1.26 inches) for books up to 320 x 241 millimeters
(12.6 x 9.49 inches) in size. Enhanced makeready features reduce
set-up times, and advanced ink jet and selective binding
capabilities expand personalization options.
"The Universal Binder's speed and reliability can
make the adhesive binding of high-volume catalogs, magazines,
directories and other products a more efficient and cost-effective
operation," according to Heidelberg senior vice president
Ulrik T. Nygaard. "Extensive selective binding and ink jetting
capabilities can also make these products more effective - without
sacrificing productivity."
Rotary gatherer hoppers on the Universal Binder 2 feature
in-line gripper drums that allow signatures to move in the same
direction throughout the binding process. The independently driven
hoppers can be phased to a section of the raceway chain for
selective gathering or shut off when not in use. The stream cover
feeder also applies covers in the same direction as the books.
Optional two- four- and six-deck selective feeders allow a
corresponding number of covers to be applied selectively.
The Universal Binder 2 can be equipped with an optional
central control systems that allow users to customize products by
selecting specific signatures from the hoppers and personalizing
them with ink jet messages inside or outside. These systems track
the completion of individual books, apply addresses and
personalized messages to the proper selectively bound books,
collect performance data and automatically package finished
products into deliverable bundles according to postal codes or
newsstand requirements.
Heidelberg is the only bindery manufacturer that makes its
own ink jet controls, and a complete range of modular
configurations are available with the Universal Binder 2. These
controls support all popular ink jet engines.
Self-adjusting hinge clamps on the Universal Binder 2 reduce
set-up time, and no tools are required to make adjustments between
jobs. Photo eyes and quick set calipers detect misfed books.
Heidelberg provides three trimmer models with the adhesive binder,
each featuring a three-knife design and a flying knife carriage
that moves with the books. The industry leading HT20 trimmer is
rated at 20,000 copies per hour. Several floor and gripper conveyor
models are also available, and Heidelberg provides a full range of
finishing auxiliaries.
At drupa, a Universal Binder 2 with 32 clamps will finish a
96-page book featuring two 48-page A4 signatures printed on the
Heidelberg Sunday 4000 web press. A gripper conveyor will deliver
the books to the Heidelberg HT-20 trimmer.
"We have made extensive efforts to integrate our web
press and high-volume finishing operations in order to develop more
advanced technology and to offer a higher level of product
integration," Nygaard explains. "The system at drupa,
including the Universal Binder and the Sunday 4000, reflects the
success of those efforts."
