Omnipage automatically identifies pages, cuts makeready time
After announcing many advanced features prior to drupa 2000,
Heidelberg waited until the first day of the show to reveal one of
the Mainstream 80's most important technology breakthroughs.
In addition to gapless blankets, the new double-width
newspaper press includes a revolutionary system that automates page
recognition at the console. The Omnipage feature utilizes cameras
mounted above the press console to instantly recognize newspaper
pages when they are placed on the console. The system can then
identify the corresponding page within the press and automatically
direct the control system to the appropriate tower, web or printing
couple. Small codes printed in the lower margin of the newspaper
pages signal the cameras.
"With multiple webs running, identifying pages manually
at the console in order to make registration or color corrections
can be time consuming," explains Heidelberg Web Systems
president Bob Brown. "This system does it instantly and
automatically, and that can cut makeready time significantly."
The Mainstream 80, unveiled for the first time at drupa 2000,
is a shaftless, double-width press designed for straight printing
at speeds up to 80,000 copies per hour. It is the first newspaper
press to feature gapless blankets and the first to utilize a 1x4
plate cylinder configuration in combination with a 1:1
plate-to-blanket cylinder ratio. Omnipage, another "industry
first", functions as part of the Mainstream's Omnicon
Control System.
