Graphic designer supports Heidelberg with print buyer
communication
Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG (Heidelberg) and the US
graphics designer Charles Spencer Anderson have joined forces to
convey to agencies and marketing managers the possibilities that
variable data printing opens up.
Heidelberg and Anderson have jointly developed the cover of
the May issue of American Printer with pop art design images to
illustrate the possibilities of variable data printing. Designed by
Charles S. Anderson and printed on the NexPress 2100, the cover
features various variable text elements and images on both the
front and reverse sides.
The design consists of a total of 52 individual images - 26
illustrations and 26 photos. Each image corresponds to a letter of
the alphabet. The letter "V", for example, is illustrated by the
image of a vampire and the letter "C" by a clown. For the reverse
side of the cover, an image has been selected to match the initial
letter of the subscriber's first name, while the image on the front
side corresponds to the initial letter of his surname. Each cover
is individually numbered, which makes each issue a unique
publication. The total circulation is in excess of 82,000 copies.
"All images have a reference to the printing process or to
NexPress", explains Mr. Anderson. "With this project it's not just
the person's name that is variable, but also his or her initials
and the images on the front and reverse sides". Wolfgang
Pfizenmaier, Digital Director at Heidelberg adds: "In Charles
Spencer Anderson, Heidelberg has found an ideal promoter for
variable data printing who will be able to convince design agencies
and potential digital print users of the benefits of this
technology."
Anderson and Heidelberg are looking to extend their
cooperation to industrial events and projects intended to show
designers, print buyers and printshops the variety of applications
and business opportunities opened up by digital print technology.
In a recent study, CAP Ventures discovered that the return rates
when using color variable data printing were an average of 36
percent higher and that response times had improved almost 34
percent.
Anderson, who owns the Charles S. Anderson Design Company and
CSA Images, is well known in the print and graphic arts industries
for his design work for the French Paper Company, but also for the
many awards he has received for his packaging, image and product
designs. Anderson's clients include Coca-Cola, Levis, Paramount
Pictures, Target, The New York Times and Nike.
Even before this partnership had gotten underway, the Charles
S. Anderson Design Company had already been working with a NexPress
2100 digital color press for a year in order to draft designs and
test out the possibilities of digital printing.
