Heidelberg Introduces Intelligent Duplo Booklet Maker

04/07/2003

Duplo system 2100 finishes, verifies VDP jobs produced on NexPress 2100

Introduced at On Demand in New York (April 7-9, 2003), the Duplo System 2100 from Heidelberg is the first finishing solution that takes col- lated output from a NexPress 2100 digital production color press, auto- matically folds, stitches and trims it into a finished booklet, and verifies its integrity.

The booklet maker works with all output from the GATF-award-winning NexPress 2100 press. With its optional bar code reader, the Duplo System 2100 is ideally suited for finishing variable data applications that contain customer-specific information on every page.

The new booklet maker provides three distinct productivity advantages over current off-line solutions:

  • Efficiently finishes any size run of booklets automatically, including those with variable sheet counts from booklet to booklet. This assures that every electronically collated set from a NexPress 2100 press is finished exactly as intended.
  • Verifies the presence of individual sheets while finishing and automatically stops and alerts an operator if any single sheet is missing or oriented incorrectly.
  • Guarantees the integrity of finished booklets, tracking each finished set. This unique feature automates a critical step in the production of variable data print projects, assuring that each individual job is accounted for and that it contains the intended page count and individualized contents - even when each page is unique.
"NexPress 2100 press owners finish an enormous variety of digital color jobs with industry standard equipment each day. Now, Heidelberg also offers them a powerful and productive finishing solution based on their press's ability to produce unique, collated sets," said Bill Blair, senior vice president, Digital, Heidelberg USA. "This approach also leverages the ability of the NexPress 2100 press to print on the broadest range of digital and offset substrates, including textured stocks."

The Duplo booklet maker offers a two-bin capacity of 2,600 sheets (20 pounds bond weight/80 gsm) and enables the production of 1,380 five letter/A4-sheet booklets (1,156 five-11 x 17 /A3-sheet booklets) per hour. The booklet maker seamlessly integrates into the NexPress 2100 workflow, accepting all substrates printable on the NexPress 2100 press, plus up to 140 pounds index stock, and also accepts multiple substrates within a job.

The system offers cost-effective, efficient booklet making for personalized direct mail, customized brochures, financial statements and instruction manuals printed on the NexPress 2100 press. In addition to booklet making, the Duplo System 2100 also provides corner and dual-side stitching, folded signatures and single-sheet folding.

The booklet maker is now available through Heidelberg USA and other Heidelberg Market Centers.
