Germany's First Digimaster 9110 Installed by Mediengruppe ABT

Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG: Digimaster 9110

Opening up new markets with digital printing

Mediengruppe ABT: Preprinting with offset, personalizing with digital printing; Finishing individual docu- ments inline; Digimaster 9110 fully integrated into the digital workflow

Germany's first Digimaster 9110 from Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG (Heidelberg) has been installed by Mediengruppe ABT of Weinheim (Baden). An all-digital black-and-white printing press, the Digimaster is an important addition to the company's range of services for personalized printing and short black/white runs. It is integrated into the internal data network and uses the same digital prepress data as the offset printing units that also form part of the workflow.

"Customers want three things: speed, a good price/performance ratio and high quality. They are not interested in what technology media service providers use in order to achieve these things. But for us it's crucial to be able to react flexibly and to choose the method of production that gives our customers the advantages they are looking for," says company proprietor Rudolf Abt, analyzing the situation on a rapidly changing market. "With the Digimaster, we can now offer jobs with runs of up to 300 for a better price than with traditional print technologies."

In addition to multicolor offset printing and comprehensive data management services, ABT has been offering black/white digital printing since 1994. Generally, mailshots and envelopes are preprinted using 4-c and multicolor offset printing and personalized using digital technology. Personalized printing has now reached a capacity of up to one million pages per month. "Personalized documents account for up to six percent of our total print orders," says Abt, "and we believe we have great potential for growth in this area."

ABT's goal is to attract more document printing customers. The reason for this is that the print-on-demand market is growing visibly, and thanks to the Digimaster 9110 and its possibilities for inline finishing with ready-to-use individualized documents, the company can make this market a special focus.

That is why ABT has invested in the full version of the Heidelberg Digimaster 9110, including the Bookletmaker. "Customers expect brochures to have two staples in the spine." Because the Digimaster 9110 centrally programs all processes - printing (in simplex and duplex), collating from a total of six paper trays, folding and stitching - in a single workflow from the client front end of the press, whole documents can be produced within a very short space of time. "The fact that it is also possible to print A3 formats, different grammages and paper qualities without any difficulty is another point in favor of the Digimaster 9110," says Abt.

"The most important thing is to implement a standard for an end-to-end digital workflow. Only media-neutral data provides access to a full range of output possibilities, from proof and offset printing to the Internet, while all the time retaining identical quality," is the advice of Rudolf Abt. Data management skills are what distinguish a modern media service provider from a commercial printer on the one hand and a photocopying shop on the other. With the Digimaster 9110, ABT has made a valuable addition to its range of output possibilities.

Mediengruppe ABT combines different industries and services under one roof. Set up as a printshop over 62 years ago, the group is now a media service provider that is able to offer its customers not only high-quality, multicolor offset printing and quick printing services but also prepress and postpress solutions, especially with dialog marketing and media-neutral databases. With over 70 employees, the group achieves annual sales of 15 million D-Mark. ABT works mainly for direct and agency customers in the region between Frankfurt and Stuttgart.
