Hartmut Mehdorn Named Eco Manager of the Year
10/22/1999
Heidelberg / Berlin, 22 October 1999 - Hartmut Mehdorn was
today, Friday, awarded the title "Eco Manager of the
Year" by the WWF (World Wide Fund for Nature) and the business
magazine "Capital".
Hartmut Mehdorn, Chairman of the Management Board of
Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG (Heidelberg) until 1 October 1999,
received this honor for his particular commitment to the
environment during his time at the Heidelberg Group. He is the
tenth winner of this annual award. The prize-giving ceremony took
place in the presence of the German Chancellor, Gerhard
Schröder, in the Hamburger Bahnhof Museum in Berlin.
The title "Eco Manager of the Year" has since 1990
been awarded to businessmen who use their expertise to promote
sustainable business processes which are focused on future needs.
Each year, awards are made to a group chief executive and a
representative of small and medium-sized businesses who have set
good examples for the whole of German industry. Personalities
outside the business world who have made a major contribution to
the environment are also awarded a special prize.
Hartmut Mehdorn headed the Heidelberg Group over the last
four years in the capacity of Chairman of the Management Board and
turned the traditional printing press manufacturer into a solution
provider for the entire printing and publishing industry. Both
sales and workforce levels doubled over the period 1995 to 1999.
From the time he joined Heidelberg, the world market leader in its
industry, Hartmut Mehdorn did much to promote the company's
activities in the field of environmental protection.
He showed impressively that financial success and
environmental commitment are not mutually exclusive.
The ecology has played a key role in the company's
strategy for success - material usage has been optimized, valuable
waste products collected, and machines designed so that up to 98%
of their materials can be recycled once their useful life is over.
All Heidelberg sites worldwide are certified to ISO 14001 and are
also subject to the rules of the EU ECO Audit in Germany. One key
factor which swung the decision of the panel of judges in
Heidelberg's favor was the company's all-embracing approach
to ecology. Environmentally friendly printing processes which
minimize the use of chemicals in the printing process itself have
helped customers make their own contribution to environmental
protection. For several years now, Heidelberg has been supplying
printing presses which are entirely free of solvents and can be
cleaned automatically without the use of chemicals. Heidelberg is a
co-founder of the industry initiative "Emission-free offset
printing". The environmental managers of the Heidelberg Group
report directly to the Management Board and have the task of
coordinating the environmental officers at the various sites.
Hartmut Mehdorn is convinced that: "Environmental protection
and earnings go together very well - though there is a need for
increased market incentives. And this is where politics must play
its part."
