During drupa 2008, Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG (Heidelberg) is
launching the world's first international environmental award for
sustainable printing in the sheetfed offset sector. The company has
set aside a prize fund of 50,000 Euro for the award, which is
divided into two categories: "Sustainable companies" and
"Forward-looking solutions". The environmental award is
focused on the sustainable use of resources and energy, climate
protection, and environmentally aware business practices. These
aspects of sustainability - which are also the judging
criteria for this year's award - can relate to a company as a
whole, or to exceptional one-off solutions in prepress, press,
postpress, logistics, and corporate culture. Winning companies and
solutions should set a benchmark for the entire industry and
encourage others to adopt sustainable business practices and
solutions.
The independent judging panel for the Heidelberg Eco Printing
Award 2008 is made up of representatives from the print media
industry, scientists from the IFEU (the Institute for Energy and
Environmental Research), and members of environmental associations.
The IFEU supports the principles of the environmental award.
Companies wishing to compete must submit a written
application form between June 1 and July 31, 2008. The Heidelberg
Eco Printing Award 2008 will be presented in December 2008.
"The idea behind the award is to show that
environmentally friendly credentials help print shops to improve
their image and boost their earnings, while eco-friendly
investments quickly pay for themselves. Heidelberg is aiming to
promote environmental awareness and ensure that printing gets
greener," explains Dr. Jürgen Rautert, Member of the
Management Board at Heidelberg.
Any print shop operating at least one sheetfed offset press
can take part in the Heidelberg Eco Printing Award 2008. The award
is open to print shops regardless of the size, make, or number of
presses they operate and the scale of their production processes.
As a result, large full-service print shops with prepress, press,
postpress, and dispatch can compete alongside small print shops
with just one press and no prepress and/or postpress facilities.
Print shops from anywhere in the world that use any kind of
substrate (paper, card, or foil) can submit an application.

To mark the occasion of drupa 2008, Heidelberg has
announced the Eco Printing Award. The price consists of a piece of
wood from an olive tree mounted on a metal plate. The wood
represents the raw material for paper production and symbolizes
nature while the metal represents the substance from which
print machines are made and is a symbol for engineering.
