1990: At the 10th trade fair for print and paper
(drupa), Heidelberg publishes a list of recommended environmentally
friendly cleaning agents for presses for the first time. Official
opening of the Research & Development Center in Heidelberg,
which is equipped with its own environmental and chemical
laboratory. The waste disposal center at the Amstetten site
is put into operation.
1992: Heidelberg makes environmental protection one of
its corporate objectives.
1993: Publication of the first Environmental Report,
which is renamed the Sustainability Report in 2000/2001.
1994: Customers are provided with regular information
on environmental protection in the form of the "Print &
Environment" series of publications, for example:
"Reduced-Alcohol Printing", "Safe and Cost-Effective
Use of UV Technology" and "Environmental Protection at
Heidelberg".
drupa 1995: Presentation of energy-saving water cooling
for presses.
Reduced-alcohol printing is demonstrated for the first time.
Washup systems adapted to work with biodegradable washing
fluid.
Ipex 1998: Low-waste automated ink supply.
1999: Former CEO Hartmut Mehdorn is named "Eco
Manager of the Year" by WWF-Deutschland and the magazine
"Capital".
Environmental protection is integrated systematically into
the product development process.
2000: The principle of a fully automatic washing
fluid recycling system is unveiled at drupa.
2001: Heidelberg is included in the Dow Jones
Sustainability Indexes STOXX and WORLD.
The 1999/2000 Environmental Report wins the German
Environmental Reporting Award. 65 major German companies took part
in the contest which was organized by the
Wirtschaftsprüferkammer (German Chamber of Auditors).
Speedmaster SM 102 receives the "Emission-tested"
certificate from the Berufsgenossenschaft Druck und
Papierverarbeitung (German Institution for Statutory Insurance and
Prevention in the Printing and Paper Industry) at the TPG (trade
fair for the printing industry in France).
At the same trade fair, the UV protocol is signed by the
European institutions for statutory insurance and prevention in
France, Germany and Great Britain. Heidelberg receives the CEFIC
Award "Responsible Care" for its contribution.
Working in tandem with econcept, a Cologne consultancy agency
for ecology and design, Heidelberg completes a two-year project
investigating the development of environmentally friendly products.
This project on the "Implementation of Ecological Product
Design Concepts in Mechanical Engineering Companies" was
promoted by the Deutsche Bundesstiftung Umwelt (German Federal
Environmental Foundation).
2002: The 2000/2001 Sustainability Report is awarded
first place in the "German Environmental Reporting
Awards" by the Wirtschaftsprüferkammer (Chamber of
Auditors).
Heidelberg unveils its peripherals in the form of the Star
System. Each Star module provides environmentally sound solutions
and cost savings.
2003: The Environmental Information Center (EIC) is
opened in the foyer of the company's head office in Heidelberg. The
aim of the EIC is to provide customers and other interested parties
with clear information on the subject of printing and the
environment.
Speedmaster CD 74 is the first press to be awarded the
Berufsgenossenschaft's "Optimized UV Printing"
certificate.
Heidelberg stages a workshop on "Sustainable Solutions
in the Print Industry" at the first World Printing
Technicians' Conference, which is held in cooperation with the
IGAS trade fair.
A new Environmental Information Center demonstrating how the
Star peripherals can save resources is presented at drupa.
2006: A new Environmental Information Center is opened
in Heidelberg.
Heidelberg unveils its new generation of Star
peripherals - the 3000 series. This generation of devices
makes production processes more environmentally friendly and cuts
costs.
2007: In cooperation with the TU Darmstadt, Heidelberg
develops an intranet-based environment portal for product
development that provides developers with information on relevant
aspects of environmental protection at the touch of a button.
One of the most frequently used dampening solutions for
reduced-alcohol offset printing (Substifix AF) is based on an idea
devised by a Heidelberg employee.

Explanation of the abbreviations:
EMAS: Eco-Management and Audit Scheme, also known as the
EU eco-audit or eco-audit. EMAS was developed by the European Union
and is a voluntary initiative comprising environmental management
and eco-audits designed for organizations who want to improve their
environmental performance. The EMAS Regulation places a lot of
emphasis on businesses taking responsibility for implementing
measures that have a direct and indirect impact on the environment.
