Environmental Milestones
1985 - The new production facility in Amstetten is
equipped with state-of-the-art environmental technology.
A soil, air and groundwater cleanup operation at the
Wiesloch site begins.
1986 - A new varnishing department, also using
powder coating, starts operating in Wiesloch. The
solvent-containing exhaust air from wet coating is channeled into a
thermal afterburner and the resulting heat is used for heating
purposes.
1989 - A supply and reconditioning system for
cooling lubricants is installed at the Amstetten site.
1990 - Coinciding with the 10th drupa trade show,
Heidelberg releases its first list of recommended environmentally
sound cleaning agents for printing presses. In Heidelberg, a
new Research and Development Center with environmental and chemical
laboratory opens. A new disposal center at the Amstetten site
starts operation.
1992 - A waste management system is implemented in
Wiesloch and a waste-free hardening shop is put into operation.
1993 - The corporate principles of Heidelberger
Druckmaschinen AG are extended to include statements on
environmental protection. The Heidelberg Group publishes its
first environmental report, which is to be
issued annually from then on. For the first time,
it includes Heidelberg's environmental
policy. Heidelberg launches its "TMA" project,
devoted to dry machining and concepts for minimizing the use of
cooling lubricants and identifying alternatives.
1994 - "Printing Without Alcohol" is the
title of the first issue of the new "Printing and the
Environment" series, which can be ordered free of
charge. Amstetten starts operating a sand regeneration system
with flue gas scrubbing and begins switching its painting and
coating systems over to solvent-free coatings.
1995 - The Heidelberg Group starts promoting an
initiative by the print media industry for reducing solvent
emissions in offset printing. The Brandenburg site receives
permission to operate its ultrafiltration system as a public waste
treatment facility. It has since been serving the regional
market. At the 11th drupa trade show, Heidelberg presents its
"Environment and Technology Island". Heidelberg
receives the Award for Environmentally Aware Corporate Management
of the Working Group of Independent Entrepreneurs (ASU).
1996 - Environmental protection is included in the
employee suggestion system. A disposal center with integrated
environmental laboratory is inaugurated at the Wiesloch
site. The Amstetten site passes its first audit under the EC
Eco Management and Audit System (EMAS).
1997 - The Management Board appoints a Chief
Environmental Officer for the Heidelberg Group and updates its
environmental policy. In Montataire (F), a new varnishing
department is put into operation that dispenses entirely with the
use of solvent-containing paints and coatings. Heidelberg
becomes a founding member of the Working Group for Environmental
Management (AGUM).
1998 - The Heidelberg Group holds its first
International Environmental Management
Workshop. The project "Ecological Product Design in
Prepress", or short: ESPRESSO, is initiated. The Kiel
site receives the "Environmentally Friendly Operation
1997" award. The Wiesloch site successfully passes an
EMAS audit. An ultrafiltration system begins operating at the
Heidelberg site in Dover, New Hampshire (USA).
1999 - The Montataire (F) and Boxmeer (NL) sites are
certified according to ISO 14001, as is the Brandenburg site,
which also passes an EMAS audit. The Amstetten site achieves
EMAS revalidation. Hartmut Mehdorn, former Chairman of the
Management Board, accepts the "Eco-Manager of the Year
1999" award on behalf of all Heidelberg employees; the award
is issued by the business magazine "Capital" and WWF
Germany. The U.S. magazine "Industry Week"
identifies Heidelberg as one of the world's best-managed
companies; one of the main criteria applied is environmental
action. The Kiel site receives the environmental award of the
city of Kiel, the capital of the German state of
Schleswig-Holstein.
2000 - The Heidelberg and Kiel sites pass EMAS
audits, with Kiel also receiving certification under ISO 14001.
Dayton and Dover/Durham become the Heidelberg Group's first
American sites to become certified pursuant to ISO
14001. Heidelberg presents its "Environmental Information
Center" at drupa 2000. Heidelberg joins the environmental
action group B.A.U.M. e.V. For the second time running, the
U.S. magazine "Industry Week" names
Heidelberg one of the world's best-managed
companies. The Dover/Durham and Dayton sites in the
U.S. join the Environmental Protection Agency's
"National Environmental Achievement Track
Program". Heidelberg holds its third International
Environmental Management Workshop.
2001 - Mühlhausen, Wiesloch and Fort Worth
(Texas, USA) are certified under ISO 14001.
Heidelberg's 8th Environmental Report (1999/2000) wins
first prize in the 2000 German Environmental Reporting
Awards run by the German Chamber of Business
Auditors. Heidelberg publishes its first sustainability
report: "Report 2000/2001 - Economy, Ecology, and Social
Responsibility". Two new issues of the "Printing and
the Environment" series (Nos. 7 and 8) are published and can
be ordered free of charge. The Dayton site in the United
States receives the first local "Pollution Prevention
Award". Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG is admitted to the
Dow Jones Sustainability Indices STOXX and WORLD. Successful ISO
14001 certification of the Rochester (USA) site.
2002 - Creation of a Sustainability Committee at Heidelberg.
The Heidelberg Report 2000/2001 wins the German Environmental
Reporting Award in the "Best Sustainability Reports"
category.
2003 - Heidelberg opens its new Environmental Information
Center (EIC) in the foyer of the company's Head Office in
Heidelberg. Guidelines for environmental protection, workplace
safety and product safety is approved. Speedmaster CD 74 UV awarded
the "Optimized UV Print" certificate, which includes the "Emissions
Tested" certificate and the GS label. Tag&Label Manufacturers
awards the Gallus Ferd. Rüesch Corporation the 2003
"Environmental Leadership Award".
2004 - Entire Sheetfed division now ISO 9001 and ISO 14001
certified.

Entire Sheetfed Division Now ISO 9001 And ISO 14001 Certified
The Heidelberg sheetfed division with its five German sites at
Amstetten, Branden-burg, Heidelberg, Kiel and Wiesloch is now
certified following ISO 9001 (Quality Management) and ISO 14001
(Environmental Management). Auditors from TÜV SÜD (a
leading techni-cal service company active in the industry, product
and transport sectors) analyzed in 2004, organization and
processes, found out positive results and also showed opportunities
for improvement. All of Heidelberg's units alongside the value
chain from marketing via development, procurement, production to
service as well as supporting functions are included in one common
